Oct. 24, 2016

OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss baseball team is nearing the end of fall practice following its sixth weekend of intrasquad scrimmages. In the final tune-up before the annual Pizza Bowl, the Rebels played on a pair of perfect afternoons at Swayze Field, Oct. 21-22.

For the second consecutive weekend, senior Colby Bortles was the Rebels’ top hitter. The third baseman went 6-for-8 with four runs, three doubles and two RBI between the two scrimmages, leading his side to victories in both contests. Through theh past five intrasquads, Bortles has hit an incredible .722 at the dish.

Alongside Bortles, a trio of Rebels also produced three-hit games Friday afternoon. Sophomore Ryan Olenek recorded three doubles, freshman Grae Kessinger went 3-for-3 and junior Tate Blackman used three hits to knock in two runs.

On the mound, three Ole Miss pitchers tossed a pair of scoreless innings. Redshirt-freshman Parker Caracci, redshirt-senior Sean Johnson and freshman Ryan Rolison all worked 2.0 frames without giving up a run; Caracci allowed one baserunner, while Rolison did not surrender a hit in his outing.

The Rebels wrapped up the weekend with a seven-inning contest Saturday afternoon. Bortles and Chase Cockrell each went 3-for-4 at the plate, recording a combined five RBI and two runs. Two of Cockrell’s three hits went for extra bases as the junior college transfer smacked a double and a triple.

Earning their squad the victory, three freshman Rebels allowed only four hits as a staff. Greer Holston pitched 3.0 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out three. Following Greer’s performance, Jackson Tavel and Korey Bell limited the bats to one hit apiece; Bell did not give up a run in his pair of innings on the rubber.
