– Last year, Colby Bortles was captain of the losing side in the 2015 Pizza Bowl. Getting a second chance as team captain this year, the senior made sure his squad got off to a good start, providing a double and a solo homer in an 8-1 victory in game one Wednesday afternoon.

Team Bortles recorded 10 hits in the seven-inning game; eight of the nine guys in the lineup smacked at least one hit. Alongside Bortles’ multi-hit game, Michael Fitzsimmons went 2-for-3 with a team-high three runs scored.

Behind the arms of James McArthur and Thomas Spinelli, Team Bortles held Team Blackman to just one run on five hits. McArthur, the first overall pick in the Pizza Bowl Draft on Monday, lived up to his selection by allowing one run on three hits through the maximum 5.0 innings. Spinelli made sure Team Blackman didn’t threaten to comeback, tossing a pair of scoreless frames.

In the top of the second, Team Bortles tallied three runs off freshman Ryan Rolison. Nick Fortes ripped a base hit up the middle to plate the game’s first run before a bases-loaded single by Thomas Dillard added two more runs on the board. One inning later, sophomore DJ Miller belted a two-run homer to increase his teams lead to 5-0.

Bortles doubled in the fourth, crossing home plate on a single by Chase Cockrell. After Team Blackman scored its lone run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Carson Klepzig, Bortles got the run back for his team with a solo shot over the left field bullpen. A double steal attempt increased the advantage to seven, leading to the final 8-1 tally.

The Pizza Bowl continues tomorrow afternoon (Oct. 27) at 3 p.m. from Swayze Field. Team Bortles will look to win the Pizza Bowl tomorrow, while Team Blackman will try to respond with a victory for force a deciding game three.
