OXFORD, Miss. – Junior Will Golsan belted a bases-clearing grand slam in the third inning, and that was all Team Blackman needed to claim the 2016 Pizza Bowl. Team Bortles battled back to cut the margin to one but fell short, 4-3, Friday afternoon at Swayze Field.

Team Bortles out-hit Team Blackman 8-6, but Golsan’s grand slam proved to be the difference. Freshman Cole Zabowski went 3-for-3 at the plate for half of Team Blackman’s hits. On the mound, a pair of Oxford natives combined to allow only two runs over six innings. Houston Roth went 4.0 innings, giving up two runs on four hits. Classmate Jason Barber closed out the game, tossing a pair of scoreless frames to earn the save.

In the setback, Michael Fitzsimmons belted a two-run homer and scored another run for his squad. Kyle Watson and Chase Cockrell provided two hits apiece, while catcher Nick Fortes added an RBI single.

Roth and Sean Johnson threw up zeroes in the first two innings before Team Blackman put together its big inning. Loading the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the third, the squad set the table for Golsan. The veteran delivered by sending a grand slam into the left field bullpen. The game quickly went from a scoreless tie to 4-0 in favor of Team Blackman.

Team Bortles answered in the top of the fourth with Fitzsimmons’ homer, cutting the lead in half, 4-2. Two innings later, Fortes smacked a base hit to bring Fitzsimmons across the plate and make it a one-run game.

Watson ripped a single to lead off the top of the seventh. Representing the tying run and looking to get into scoring position, the Rebels’ fastest player tried to steal second. However, freshman Cooper Johnson used his rocket arm to throw out the speedster and end the threat. Barber recorded a strikeout and a groundout to end the game, leading to a dogpile at the pitcher’s mound for Team Blackman.
