Ole Miss-Arkansas Postgame Quotes

Jan. 31, 2001

Recap?|? Box Score?|? Notes

Ole Miss head coach Rod Barnes:
(On the game)
"This was a big game for our team at this point in the season. We have been practicing better and it showed here tonight. Our upperclassmen really stepped it up. They have to lead by example and they did. We had to bounce back after a hard loss in Starkville. Jason Harrison, Jason Flanigan and Rahim (Lockhart) all stepped up tonight."

(On overcoming Arkansas' zone defense and rebounding)
"We had to get in there and start attacking their defense. I felt like we had been shooting the ball too quick in the last few games. We had to slow down and show some patience. In the first half, they were very aggressive and fought hard on the offensive boards. They had better hustle than us in the first half, but we turned it up in the second half. I told the guys that I do not accept losing as a result of being out-hustled."

(On the magnitude of defeating Arkansas)
"We have been striving to be a better team. We cannot lose in Tad Smith Coliseum if we want to continue making progress. This win moved us closer to making the NCAA Tournament. This was a quality win over a quality team."

Ole Miss freshman forward Justin Reed
(On Arkansas)
"Arkansas had good intensity in the first half. At halftime, we had to get our thoughts together. We came out in the second half and took their intensity away."

(On his performance)
"I think I had a good first half defensively. I got into foul trouble early. Coach Barnes told me to come out and play aggressive in the second half and that is what I did. This was a big win for our team."

(On going to Auburn)
"We are both young teams. I think it will come down to which team is more prepared. I know we will practice hard the next couple of days."

Ole Miss sophomore guard David Sanders
(On his game)
"We knew that we had to come out and play hard for 40 minutes. We knew it was going to be a tough game."

"I want to thank God that everybody stayed with it. We knew that we had to play hard a full, 40 minutes. We knew that we would have to improve both our offense and defense in the second half in order to win the game."

(On preparing for the game)
"Losing the game would have been hard for us. We knew that we had to come out and win this game to give ourselves a chance down the road in the conference."

Arkansas head coach Nolan Richardson
(On the game)
"You have to give total credit to the Rebels, they went on a tremendous run. You do not have a chance to win if your opponent shoots 42 free throws."

(On Jannero Pargo's second half performance)
"He was totally out of sync in the first half. In the second half he became more aggressive. When he gets aggressive he can really impact a game. Jannero also benefitted from Joe (Johnson) moving to point guard. Joe put a lot on his shoulders."

(On the intentional foul)
"I interpret the rule as a rough foul. That's inexcusable. You can foul a guy without knocking him into the cameras. I didn't appreciate that."

Arkansas junior guard Jannero Pargo
(On his second half performance)
"I just tried to come out and be aggressive in the second half. I started taking more shots and they started dropping. I got hot, but we just could not put them away. We played hard though."

(On the Ole Miss 14-0 run)
"Basketball is a mental game, and down the stretch we just lost our focus. They took advantage of their opportunities and it paid off for them."

Arkansas sophomore forward Joe Johnson
(On the game)
"I thought we were in great position at the half. In the second half, they had that great run and just put us away."

(On the Ole Miss run)
"We shot a couple of airballs, they hit some big threes that gave them a lot of momentum. That really got the crowd into it."

Arkansas sophomore forward Carl Baker
(On playing in Oxford)
"They have had some big wins against us. It is frustrating now to come here. It is like Ole Miss knows they are going to win when they are at home."

(On Arkansas' struggles on the road)
"It seems like we are always beating ourselves late in the game on the road."

(On Ole Miss' free throw shooting)
"It seemed like they could not miss. The only one that did miss was (Rahim) Lockhart. The rest of them were just on from the line tonight."
