Sesay Named SEC Player of the Year
Mar. 11, 1998
ATLANTA, Ga. -- Ole Miss senior forward Ansu Sesay has been named the Associated Press (AP) Southeastern Conference Player of the Year, as announced on Wednesday by the wire service. Sesay, who was also selected to the All-SEC first team, was a unanimous choice for the player of the year honor. Junior guard Keith Carter was an All-SEC second team pick.
"I think Ansu has had a tremendous year," said Ole Miss head coach Rob Evans. "He has led this team to back-to-back SEC Western Division championships. It's an honor for him to be selected. It is the culmination of a lot of hard work on his part, and a lot of unselfishness on his part and his teammates' part. It is a tremendous honor not only for him, but also for the team. He is very deserving of every award he has received."
On Tuesday, Sesay was selected to the Associated Press All-America second team, making it the third All-America team to which he has been named this season. Last week, Sesay, who was also named to Basketball Weekly's All-America first team and Basketball Times All-America second team, earned the SEC Player of the Year award voted on by the league's coaches.
Sesay was a consensus pick to the Associated Press All-SEC first team. South Carolina's BJ McKie was also a unanimous selection to the first team. Joining Sesay and McKie on the All-SEC first team were Vanderbilt's Drew Maddux, Arkansas' Nick Davis and Kentucky's Nazr Mohammed.
Last week, Sesay was the only unanimous choice to the coaches' All-SEC first team. Sesay was also selected the United States Basketball Writers' Association (USBWA) District 4 Player of the Year and was named to the All-District 4 squad. He was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District 6 first team.
Sesay leads the Rebels in scoring and rebounding with averages of 18.9 points and 7.7 rebounds, respectively. The SEC's scoring leader, Sesay is also among the league's leaders in rebounding (5th; 7.7) and field goal percentage (5th; 46.1). He has scored in double figures in 52 consecutive games, and has also recorded 11 double-doubles this season. Sesay is No. 9 on the Ole Miss career scoring list with 1,417 points. Last year, Sesay was named to College Hoops Insider All-America fourth team.
Carter picked up his first postseason honor, as he was named to the Associated Press All-SEC second team. It is Carter's first postseason honor since he was selected to the SEC All-Freshman squad in 1996. This season, Carter is second on the team in scoring with a 14.5 average and third in rebounding with 6.0 boards per game. He is the top rebounding guard in the SEC. Carter, who netted a career-high 33 points in Ole Miss' win over Temple on Nov. 21, is currently No. 19 on the Rebel career scoring chart with 1,118 points.
"It was a great honor for Keith that he was selected to the AP All-SEC second team," said Evans. "I feel that Keith is one of the top 15 players in the SEC. Keith has worked extremely hard to improve his game. He is one of the big reasons why we have had a great amount of success the past two seasons. Keith is very deserving of the honor."
The No. 13 ranked Rebels (22-6) return to action on Friday, Mar. 13 when they will meet Valparaiso (21-9) in a first-round game in the Midwest Region of the NCAA Tournament. Game time is 11:30 a.m.
