April 20, 2017

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss continued its outstanding recruiting success with the addition of Memphis graduate transfer Markel Crawford, head coach Andy Kennedy announced Thursday.

The Memphis, Tennessee native will graduate from the University of Memphis after this semester and will enroll in graduate school at Ole Miss to be eligible for the 2017-18 season. Crawford finished second on the Tigers in scoring last season at 12.8 points per game and led the team with 42 3-pointers, while shooting 47.8 percent from the floor. A 6-5 guard, he was second on the squad with 46 steals and finished third in rebounding averaging 4.4 boards a game in 31 starts.

"We are excited to add Markel to our program,” said Kennedy, the all-time winningest coach in Ole Miss history. “We recruited him years ago when he was coming out of Melrose in Memphis, and this time we were successful. Markel is a warrior! He is a versatile guard capable of playing either backcourt position. He is big, strong and athletic with the ability to make plays both on the offensive and defensive ends. He was a heavy coveted post-grad transfer whom we've played against the last two years. We're looking forward to having him in a Rebel uniform next season!"

A three-year starter for the Tigers, Crawford scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds in a loss to Ole Miss last year and posted 28 points and eight boards against Final Four participant South Carolina. He scored in double figures 22 times last season and topped the 20-point mark on four occasions, including a career high 30-point outburst against South Florida. He added 20 points against Oklahoma and scored 19 in a win over Connecticut.

As a senior, Crawford missed the entire 2012-13 basketball season at Melrose as a result of an ACL injury in the summer of 2012, but was still ranked the nation's No. 59 player by Rivals.com in ratings released after the season. A consensus top-35 shooting guard in the nation, Crawford was rated among the country's top guards by Rivals.com (No. 15), Scout.com (No. 29) and ESPN.com (No. 35). As a junior in 2011-12, he averaged 15.2 ppg and shot 52.5 percent from the field to help lead Melrose to a 24-8 overall record and the District 16AAA championship.

Crawford joins signees Jamarko Pickett, Devontae Shuler, Bruce Stevens and Parker Stewart in the 2016-17 Ole Miss signing class, which is ranked No. 16 in the nation according to 247 Sports. A consensus four-star prospect, Pickett is ranked as one of the top 100 players nationally by ESPN, Rivals and Scout, rating as high as No. 51 in the nation by Scout. Also a consensus four-star player, Shuler is rated the No. 97 player nationally by Scout and averaged 15.3 points per game as a senior for powerhouse Oak Hill Academy (Va.) while leading the team in steals. The No. 1 rated junior college player in the nation by 247 Sports, Stevens averaged 16.2 points and 11.6 rebounds per game this season at Jones County (Miss.) Junior College en route to first team All-America honors from the NJCAA. An all-state selection and the runner-up for Mr. Basketball in the state of Tennessee, Stewart is a consensus three-star prospect and considered one of the best shooters in the country, as he averaged 27.0 points a game as a senior at Union City (Tenn.).
