Ole Miss Basketball Announces 2000-01 Schedule
July 27, 2000
OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss men's basketball squad will face another rugged schedule for the 2000-01 campaign, announced Rebel head coach Rod Barnes Thursday. In addition to the Southeastern Conference slate, the Rebels will have early non-conference tests at home against Oklahoma and Kansas State and on the road at Memphis and the Pearl Harbor Invitational in Hawaii.
The schedule includes 11 teams which advanced to the postseason in 1999-2000, including eight NCAA Tournament teams. Times for all games will be announced at a later date.
"Our schedule has a good balance to it, and it is a good fit for where our basketball program is right now," said Barnes, who enters his third season in 2000-01. "We have some quality opponents in the non-conference portion of our schedule.
"The SEC will be tough again. I thought last year was a good one for the league. From top to bottom, we have the best conference in the country. We are going to have several teams ranked in the polls at some time during the year. I think the league could send nine or 10 teams to the postseason."
Ole Miss tips off its 2000-01 season on Nov. 18 with a home game versus Arkansas-Pine Bluff. After a home game against Sam Houston State on Nov. 22, the Rebels take to the road for the first time on Nov. 25 when they travel to Richmond, Va., to meet Virginia Commonwealth. Ole Miss also hosts Louisiana-Monroe on Nov. 28 to close out the first month of action.
The December portion of the Rebels' schedule has a Big 12 Conference flavor to it. Ole Miss hosts Oklahoma on Dec. 2 and Kansas State on Dec. 5, and could meet Iowa State in the Pearl Harbor Invitational, which is set for Dec. 21-23 in Laie, Hawaii.
The Rebels open play in the Pearl Harbor Invitational against Southern Illinois. The field also includes Southern Cal of the Pac-10 Conference and BYU of the Mountain West Conference. The other teams in the tournament are Boise State, Troy State and BYU-Hawaii.
The Rebels' other December contests are home games against Southeastern Louisiana (Dec. 13), Troy State (Dec. 18) and Morris Brown (Dec. 30) and a road encounter versus Mid-South rival Memphis (Dec. 9).
Ole Miss begins its SEC schedule on the road, playing four of its first six conference games away from Tad Smith Coliseum. The Rebels open conference play against Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn., on Jan. 6, followed by a Jan. 10 trip to Fayetteville, Ark., to meet the Razorbacks.
Ole Miss plays each SEC Western Division opponent (Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, LSU, Mississippi State) twice on a home-and-home basis. The Rebels host SEC Eastern Division foes Georgia (Jan. 13), Kentucky (Jan. 20) and Tennessee (Feb. 10), and travel to Vanderbilt (Jan. 6), South Carolina (Feb. 17) and Florida (Feb. 21).
The SEC Tournament is set for the Gaylord Entertainment Center in Nashville, Tenn., Mar. 8-11.
The Rebels return three starters from last year's squad that posted a 19-14 record and advanced to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) quarterfinals. The postseason appearance was Ole Miss' fourth straight.
