Men's Basketball Names Grant Pate as Administrative Assistant

Aug. 2, 1999

OXFORD, Miss. - Grant Pate, a 1990 graduate of Ole Miss, has been named to the post of administrative assistant for the Rebel basketball program, head coach Rod Barnes announced on Monday.

Pate took the post vacated by Michael Schrage, who served as the program's administrative assistant for the 1998-99 season. Schrage left in May to take a similar position with the Duke University basketball program. Pate will be in charge of film exchange, game editing and the team's managers. He will also assist in overseeing the academic progress of the student-athletes and team travel during the season.

"I'm excited to welcome back Grant to the Ole Miss basketball family," said Barnes, who will be entering his second season as the Rebels' head coach. "Grant is a good friend, and we worked together here at Ole Miss as undergraduates and also at West Alabama. Grant is a well-rounded individual, and he will be a valuable asset for our basketball program."

Pate comes to Ole Miss from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Ark., where he served as an assistant coach on the Tiger staff since 1994. His duties included serving as recruiting coordintor, director of the Tigers' basketball camps and film exchange coordinator. He also assisted in the Tigers' strength and conditioning program, helped with scheduling and monitored the student-athletes' academic progress. While at Ouachita Baptist, Pate helped direct the Tigers to the NCAA Division II postseason in 1995, 1996 and 1997. In the 1996-97 campaign, the Tigers won 17 games (17-10 record), the most victories by a Ouachita Baptist team in 10 seasons. This past year, Pate also helped the Tiger program sign Jarris Kentle, who was named the MVP of the 1999 Arkansas Class 4A state tournament.

Prior to his time at Ouachita Baptist, Pate served as an assistant coach at University of Arkansas-Monticello from 1992-94. In his two seasons on the Runnin' Weevils staff, Pate coordinated recruiting, scheduling, scouting reports and summer camps. He also assisted with offensive strategy, academic advising and team travel. Pate helped guide Arkansas-Monticello to consecutive appearances in the NAIA postseason in 1993 and 1994. Following his first season in 1992-93, he assisted in the recruitment of two highly-touted players in Chris Daniels and Johnnie Reece. Daniels was named the MVP of the Arkansas High School All-Star Game in the summer of 1993, while Reece was a McDonald's and Street & Smith's high school All-America pick. The Runnin' Weevils won 18 games in each of Pate's two seasons and set 12 school records.

Following graduation from Ole Miss in 1990, Pate was named an assistant coach at the University of West Alabama, where he joined Barnes on Rick Reedy's staff. While at West Alabama from 1990-92, Pate coordinated the strength and conditioning program and assisted with on-the-floor coaching and academic advising. He also coordinated film exchange, team travel and scheduling.

While at Ole Miss, Pate was a member of the Rebel basketball program for three seasons from 1987-90. He served as equipment manager his first season (1987-88), and then was a student assistant coach his final two years (1988-89, 1989-90). The 1989 Rebel team received a bid to the NIT, and the 1990 squad advanced to the finals of the Southeastern Conference Tournament.

Off the court, Pate has been active in the Upward Bound Math and Science Program at Ouachita Baptist and has served as a volunteer for the Special Olympics of Arkansas and American Cancer Society. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order and M-Club at Ole Miss.

The 1999-2000 Rebels return seven letterwinners, including two starters, from last year's squad which posted a 20-13 overall record and an 8-8 SEC mark. Ole Miss advanced to its third straight NCAA Tournament in 1999.
