Oct. 7, 1999
OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss men's and women's basketball teams will tip off their 1999-2000 seasons on Friday, Oct. 15 with Rebel Hoopla at Tad Smith Coliseum. Activities will begin at 11:00 p.m., with the Rebels and Lady Rebels taking the floor at midnight.
Doors to the coliseum will open at 10:30 p.m., and admission to the event is free. The public is invited to attend. David Kellum, "Voice of the Rebels," will emcee the event. The Ole Miss varsity cheerleaders, JV cheerleaders, Rebelettes and JV Rebelettes will also be a part of the festivities.
Rebel Hoopla kicks off at 11:00 p.m. with team autograph sessions on the Tad Smith Coliseum concourse. At 11:30 p.m., the action will turn to the basketball court, where games and give-a-ways will be held. Among the prizes to be won will be two Southeastern Conference Tournament tickets, an all-expense paid trip for two with the men's basketball team to Tennessee, an all-expense paid trip for two with the women's basketball team to South Carolina, and more. At midnight, the Rebel and Lady Rebel teams will take to the court to open the 1999-2000 season.
"We're excited about the season approaching," said Lady Rebel head coach Ron Aldy, who is in his third season. "Rebel Hoopla is a great event to get our players excited about the season, and for our fans to see what's in store for both teams this year.
"We're looking to forward to an outstanding athletic weekend with Rebel Hoopla and the football game against Alabama following on Saturday. We are going to have a great time at Rebel Hoopla."
The Lady Rebels enter their 25th year of competition in 1999-2000 with nine letterwinners returning from last season's team. Ole Miss had its 23rd winning campaign in 1998-99 and advanced to the postseason for the 15th time in the last 18 years. Leading the way for the Lady Rebels this season will be returning starters, Frankie Boyd at center and Becky Myatt and Takela Corbitt at the guards.
The Rebel basketball squad returns only two starters and seven letterwinners from last year's team which had a 20-13 record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament second round. Head coach Rod Barnes, who is in his second season, will rely heavily on seniors Marcus Hicks and Lataryl Williams to lead a young Rebel team.
"This is a great time for our fans to see the 1999-2000 Ole Miss basketball teams," said Barnes. "Rebel Hoopla will be a great way to start off a tremendous athletic weekend here at Ole Miss. There will be a lot of people on campus for the weekend, and we're expecting a big crowd next Friday. It's going to be an exciting night."
The men's team will begin exhibition play on Friday, Nov. 5 with a 7:00 p.m. game against Spirit Express. The Lady Rebels will play their first exhibition game on Sunday, Nov. 7 at 2:00 p.m. versus the Houston Jags.
Both teams will tip off regular season play with a doubleheader on
Nov. 19 at Tad Smith Coliseum. The Lady Rebels will host Memphis at 5:00
p.m., followed by the men's team playing Jacksonville State at 7:30 p.m.
