Lockhart Stands Out For Rebels Saturday
Oct. 30, 1999
OXFORD, Miss. - Junior forward Rahim Lockhart netted 22 points and grabbed six boards to highlight the Ole Miss men's basketball scrimmage on Saturday. The scrimmage was the team's second of the preseason.
Saturday's scrimmage consisted of a five-minute period, a 10-minute period and a 15-minute period. The White team won the first period, 8-7, but the Blue squad took the final two sessions by scores of 17-15 and 41-26.
Lockhart scored his 22 points and 9-of-15 shooting from the field and 4-of-6 from the charity stripe. Junior Jason Flanigan added 16 points for the Blue team, while senior Marcus Hicks led the White squad with 16 points and four assists.
"We made some improvements from last Saturday's scrimmage," said Ole Miss head coach Rod Barnes. "Rahim Lockhart and Jason Flanigan played really well today, and Marcus Hicks had a good performance. I liked what I saw from our freshmen, especially Emmanuel Wade, Josh Hayes and John Gunn. They all did a good job in today's scrimmage. This past week, John Gunn made a big improvement, and I'm proud of him for his hard work.
"Our intensity was good today, but we are still making mistakes on both the offensive and defensive ends. We are continuing to improve, and we'll get back to practice on Monday, work on the fundamentals and get ready for our first exhibition game on Friday (Nov. 5)."
Flanigan scored his 16 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throw line, while Hicks was 5-of-8 from the floor and 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Overall, the teams shot a combined 27-of-35 from the charity stripe (77.1 percent).
Gunn scored seven points and had two assists, while Wade had 10 points, three rebounds and four assists. Hayes netted 10 points and grabbed four boards.
The Rebels open their exhibition season on Friday, Nov. 5 against Spirit Express at 7:00 p.m.
"Our players are really looking forward to the first exhibition game on Friday," Barnes said. "They have worked hard playing against each other in practice, but we need the game to play together as a team and learn what we will do in certain game situations. We are playing Spirit Express, and we're going to have to play well because they have an experienced team. We'll be ready to go on Friday."
Following Friday's exhibition game, Ole Miss will host a second
exhibition contest on Saturday, Nov. 13 against the Ukraine Select Team at
7:00 p.m. The Rebels open regular-season play on Nov. 19 against
Jacksonville State. Game time for the season opener is 7:30 p.m. at Tad
