ASK OLE MISS: Kennedy Answers Your Questions
ASK OLE MISS provides Rebel fans interactive opportunities with some of the key figures in Ole Miss athletics. The latest installment features head men's basketball coach Andy Kennedy. Questions were sent in by fans through OleMissSports.com over the past week, and Kennedy has addressed many of those in the following Q&A.
Q: Will our big men be more athletic and capable of playing more offense and defense away from the basket?
Yes. The make up of our frontcourt is much more versatile as it relates to being able to do things differently on both ends of the floor. With the addition of Terrance Henry, Murphy Holloway and DeAundre Cranston, we now feel more comfortable in our abilities to match up to the variety of styles that we will face throughout the course of the season.
Q: What can the Practice Facility do for the program?
Number one it can allow us as coaches to do our jobs more efficiently, as we will be able to serve the needs of our student-athletes academically and athletically. It will also make a statement as it relates to the commitment of our University to giving our players everything they need to compete at the highest level.
Q: What will be the overall tempo of the games this year and shooting strategy?
We hope to continue to implore a fast paced style offensively. We’ve increased by over 16 points per game in the two years since we’ve been here from the team in which we inherited. The makeup of our team we feel will enable us to continue to play at a pace that we feel that gives us the best chance to be successful.
Q: As one of the best dressed coaches in college basketball, is your sense of fashion and style inherited or learned?
When you have a face for radio such as I, you have to work very hard to distract the eye from such curses.
Q: At this point, which of the new guys has made the most noise, and will he be able to continue that once we get into SEC play?
The biggest opportunity will be provided along our frontcourt. We graduated three guys that played the majority of those 80 frontcourt minutes, so obviously the opportunity will be given as it relates to minutes in our frontcourt. We’ve got five guys competing for those minutes, four which have never been in a Division 1 game. They’ll have an opportunity much like Chris Warren had last year with the departure of Todd Abernethy, and we hope someone takes advantage of it either individually or collectively as he was able to do last year.
Q: What is it that you and your staff are doing to be able to attract such great recruits?
I think we are selling them on a vision for a long-term plan to compete for championships at Ole Miss. Obviously we have a fantastic University coupled with our affiliation with the Southeastern Conference which is second to none across the board, and we hope that our style of play in enticing to show kids that we put them in position to be successful.
Q: How do you plan on replacing the points and rebounds of Dwayne Curtis?
We’re going to have to do it collectively with a number of different options. We feel like the versatility with the newcomers on our frontline will give us a chance to spread the floor which will allow their personal skill sets to make an impact.
Q: What can we as fans do to help the program reach the next level?
Continue to support. Not only with financial contributions which are part of modern day big time athletics, but also by continuing to provide a homecourt advantage which has been the case over the last two years. Truly get vested in taking some personal ownership of our program.
