Monday, November 9 7:00 p.m.
Tad Smith Coliseum Oxford, Miss.

OLE MISS TO PLAY FINAL EXHIBITION GAME ON MONDAY - The Rebels will play their final exhibition game on Monday, Nov. 9 versus North Melbourne, Australia, at Tad Smith Coliseum. Game time is 7:00 p.m. Ole Miss defeated Spirit Express, 105-80 in its first exhibition contest on Nov. 3. The North Melbourne Giants enter Monday's game with a 0-5 record on their current tour of the United States. The Giants dropped an 81-60 decision to Western Kentucky in their last outing on Saturday (Nov. 7).

BARNES TAKES OVER REBEL PROGRAM - Rod Barnes begins his first season at the helm of the Ole Miss Rebel basketball program. Barnes was hired as the Rebel head coach on April 9, 1998, after Rob Evans left to take the head coaching position at Arizona State on April 6. A 1988 graduate of Ole Miss, Barnes served as an assistant under Evans from 1993-98. During his time as an assistant coach, the Rebels compiled a record of 76-63 and won back-to-back Southeastern Conference Western Division titles and received consecutive NCAA Tournament berths in 1997 and 1998. Barnes played at Ole Miss from 1984-88 and was named All-SEC his senior season. He still ranks on the Ole Miss career charts in scoring (15th; 1,201 points), assists (2nd; 456) and steals (5th; 154).

REBELS OPEN REGULAR-SEASON PLAY ON NOV. 13 - Ole Miss will begin regular-season action on Nov. 13 versus Alabama State. The Nov. 13 contest is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start at Tad Smith Coliseum. The last time the two teams met was in the 1983 NIT, a 87-75 victory for the Rebels. The Hornets have posted wins in their two exhibition contests with victories over Skovbakken, Denmark (84-65) on Nov. 3 and Vasda USA (91-70) on Nov. 7. Corey Williams, Alabama State's top returning scorer from 1997-98, netted 21 points versus Skovbakken, Denmark, and 23 points against Vasda USA.

SCOUTING NORTH MELBOURNE - The North Melbourne Giants are 0-5 on their current tour. The Giants have lost to Indiana (109-67), Purdue (94-62), Michigan (80-48), Southern Illinois (80-72) and Western Kentucky (81-60). Antione Howard and Vlad Boer have led North Melbourne on the offensive end in the first five games. Howard has averaged 12.8 points in five contests, while Boer has averaged 8.8 points in four games. Boer did not play in the game at Purdue. North Melbourne, coached by Dean Vickerman, won the CBA National Championship in 1993.

CARTER NAMED PRESEASON NAISMITH CANDIDATE - Senior Keith Carter (Perryville, Ark.) was named as one of 20 preseason candidates for the 1999 Naismith College Player of the Year, as announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club in early October. Carter is one of four players >from the Southeastern Conference to be named among the preseason candidates. Georgia's Jumaine Jones, South Carolina's BJ McKie and Kentucky's Scott Padgett were also among the 20 preseason candidates for the player of the year honor.

This past summer, Carter played an integral role in helping lead the USA Goodwill Games Team to a 4-1 record and the gold medal. It was the first time that a USA amateur team had won gold in international play since 1986. In the five games, Carter averaged 7.8 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.0 assists, while shooting 48.1 percent from the field and 40 percent from the three-point arc.

Following the 1997-98 season, the Perryville, Ark., native was named to the Associated Press All-Southeastern Conference second team. He was second on the squad in scoring with a 14.8 average and was third in rebounding with a 6.2 average. Carter scored the 1,000th point of his career in the Rebels' win over Vanderbilt on Feb. 11, and finished the season with 1,140 points which places him in the No. 17 spot on the Rebel career scoring chart. Carter had a solid all-around performance in the Rebels' first exhibition game versus Spirit Express on Nov. 3. The All-America candidate recorded 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists in Ole Miss' 105-80 victory.

A "COMING-OUT" PARTY - In the Rebels' first exhibition game on Nov. 3, the newcomers made their presence known, as they accounted for 64 of Ole Miss' 105 points (61 percent) in the 105-80 win. Junior Marcus Hicks led the newcomer charge with 17 points, while freshmen Darrian Brown and Jason Harrison each added 15 points apiece. Junior Lataryl Williams also netted double figures with 11 points. Redshirt freshman John Engstrom scored four points, and freshman Matt Pruitt added two points. The newcomers also combined to pull down 25 of the team's 52 rebounds (48.1 percent).

REBELS PICKED TO FINISH THIRD IN SEC WESTERN DIVISION - In the Southeastern Conference media day voting, Ole Miss was picked to finished third in the SEC Western Division. Arkansas was the overwhelming choice to win the Western Division, with Auburn picked to finish second. Mississippi State was fourth followed by Alabama and LSU. In the SEC Eastern Division, Kentucky was picked to finish first followed by Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Vanderbilt. The Wildcats were also selected to win the overall SEC championship.

"TAD PAD" SWEET "TAD PAD" - The Rebels posted a perfect 14-0 record at Tad Smith Coliseum (a.k.a. the "Tad Pad") last year. The Rebels have won 35 of its last 36 games dating back to the middle of the 1995-96 season. The Rebels' lone loss in the streak was a 59-46 setback to Alabama on Jan. 8, 1997. The streak began on Jan. 24, 1996, with an 82-69 win over Auburn. With its 74-67 win over Auburn on Feb. 28, Ole Miss extended its school-record home winning streak to 20 games. In the past six seasons (1992-present), Ole Miss has an overall home record of 63-22 (.741 winning percentage).
