DeMarcus Covington is in his second season as a graduate assistant for defense after being hired by Hugh Freeze in August 2013. He helps coach the Rebel defensive line.

Covington arrived in Oxford from UAB, where he was a defensive graduate assistant in 2012, working with the Blazer linebackers and then the defensive line.

Covington was a four-year letterman and a three-year starter at wide receiver for Samford from 2007-10. He played under former Heisman Trophy winner Pat Sullivan and was the 2010 recipient of the Bobby Bowden Award. Covington also started a non-profit football camp in 2012 call Next Level. The camp serves as an outlet to the youth of Birmingham for a full day of football-related drills and activities.

A native of Birmingham, Covington attended John Carroll Catholic High School. He earned his bachelor's degree in sports administration from Samford in the fall of 2011 and is currently pursuing a master's in physical education.
