2013 Spring Practice Schedule

OXFORD, Miss. – Morning rains sent the Ole Miss football team into the Indoor Practice Facility for Monday’s practice session, the second of the spring for Hugh Freeze’s Rebels.

Freeze talked about what the players carried over from the fall and from Sunday’s first practice during Monday’s two-hour workout in helmets and shorts.

“(The retention was) pretty good at some spots, not so good at others,” Freeze said. “We’re trying to get the young kids like I’Tavius (Mathers), Jaylen (Walton) more involved. And of course (Mark) Dodson is brand new to us, so he’s still making some mistakes. Maikhail (Miller) is getting a lot more reps. He didn’t get enough last year to have great retention, so that kind of makes plays look bad from time to time. Our offensive line and defensively it looks like the retention’s pretty good. The young guys are making mistakes, the ones that did it a lot have pretty good retention.”

One player on the field is in the unique situation of being both a veteran presence and new to the defensive schemes. Senior linebacker D.T. Shackelford, who is now wearing a No. 9 jersey, is back in full action after missing two years with knee injuries.

“He’s learning,” said Freeze of the team leader. “No question he looks the part and we love having him out there, he’s just got a long way to go in learning the stuff.”

One of the highlights of the Rebels’ recent No. 2-ranked recruiting class was top JUCO prospect Lavon Hooks, a 6-foot-4, 290-pound defensive tackle.

“(Hooks) is very athletic but has no clue what’s going on,” Freeze said. “But he has the tools.”

Sophomore DT Issac Gross was held out of practice on Monday while recovering from a minor surgery in the offseason. Freeze said he expects Gross back on the practice field next week.

The Rebels will go through their third practice of the spring on Wednesday at 8 a.m.

All spring practices are open to the public. Use of cell phones and cameras are prohibited for fans at practice, and fans must remain in the designated area. Fans are not allowed between the practice fields.
