OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss football team went back to work on Wednesday afternoon in a two-hour workout on the outdoor practice fields adjacent to the Manning Center.

After the defense dominated practice on Monday, Rebel coach Hugh Freeze said the offense bounced back to win the day on Wednesday in what he said was one of the team's best practices this spring.

"That may have been our best day of competition," Freeze said. "They were on the edge. There was a lto of emotion. Good back and forth, physical. I really liked today."

Freeze talked about what went into the offense having a better day on Wednesday.

"The scripting was probably a little better on the coaches' part as far as things that we can do and do well against all the looks," he said. "The quarterbacks played well and we took care of the ball. And we were effective running it."

Although the Rebels haven't installed punt return packages yet, Freeze mentioned that Carlos Davis, Quincy Adeboyejo, Trae Elston and Anthony Alford have been working on punt return catches. He singled out Davis, in particular.

"Carlos Davis seems real natural back there," Freeze said. "He gives us some speed."

On the injury front, Lavon Hooks was on the field Wednesday, but unable to finish the workout. Aaron Morris is still rehabbing his knee and is going through individual drills. Vince Sanders is still battling a hamstring injury suffered this spring.

Freeze talked about why the team seems to be having a more consistent spring practice than last year.

"The competitive vibe that I'm feeling out here is definitely more consistent (than last year)," he said. "I would think the continuity of the staff, the same systems, some of the same kids in year three with us, just us being together that long has certainly helped with that. And depth - you're able to have more consistent plays out of some people because the talent level has risen some."

The Rebels will hold their second open practice of the season this Saturday, tentatively scheduled for 11 a.m. at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. More details will be made available later in the week.
