OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss football team is in the home stretch of spring practices and with the annual Grove Bowl on Saturday, head football coach Hugh Freeze talked about the most recent scrimmage.

"There were a lot of good things from Saturday," Freeze said. "I thought we ran the ball well in between the tackle and made some explosive plays that tipped the ball away. Saturday was DeVante Kincade and Ryan Buchanan's first time being in the pocket live and some of those hits they didn't really protect it well. Jeremy Liggin's, on a run down the red zone, took a hit right on the ball. It was a good play and he didn't really have it too loose, but you have to protect the ball, we can't turn it over. Although it was good to see the defense go and get it."

Freeze continued to praise the growth of some of the younger players who will be an important piece as the Rebels continue to add depth.

"I thought Anthony Alford flew around and played physical and I thought C.J. Hampton made some good plays. Collins Moore continues to show up offensively. Christian Russell runs around and is very physical. He just doesn't know everything that we're doing right now. Marquis Haynes also shows up> Really we have some good young guys showing up that we're going to need to help us have the depth that we need to compete yearlong in the schedule that we have."

Freeze also discussed the prospect of having quarterbacks, Ryan Buchanan and DeVante Kincade going live through spring practices.

"Throughout spring, yes, we're going to have them go live, I'm not sure fall camp will be that way," said Freeze. "We're going to try in the live periods this week and the spring game, if they are in the pocket, we're going to try and get the defensive line to back off, but if they run it or scramble they'll be live. DeVante (Kincade) took a pretty good hit from Fadol Brown in the pocket last week, so we're going to try and eliminate that one but I can't say that will always happen."

Freeze also discussed on several members of the team who enrolled early and how they are getting acclimated.

"Kendrick Doss is just learning and his head is spinning, but he's a phenomenal kid. We've got to get him some more quality reps," said Freeze. "I think of our safeties and 1A and 1B. With C.J. Hampton and Anthony we feel different about that position now than we did last year. Marquis Haynes, I think he's just a special athlete."

The Rebels will host the annual Grove Bowl on Saturday (April 5). Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. at Vaught- Hemingway Stadium and is free admission. For all the details surrounding the 2014 Grove Bowl Week check out OleMissFB.com.
