OXFORD, Miss. – With the Regions Bank Grove Bowl just one day away, the Ole Miss football team had another high-energy practice on a sunny and breezy Friday afternoon on the football practice fields.

“We got that non-padded practice out of the way Monday so we could finish like this,” said Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze in reference to the highly competitive nature of Friday’s practice. “Our team has developed more toughness this spring. It’s definitely a competitive squad right now. I don’t know how much better that means we really are, but I know we’re a more physical football team, we run around better and I love the competitive spirit I see out here.”

That competitive spirit will be on full display again Saturday with the Regions Bank Grove Bowl at noon CT at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

When asked if this year’s spring practices have been more competitive and tough than last year, Freeze said they have been without a doubt.

“We didn’t feel the freedom (last year) to do what we’re doing right now, either,” Freeze said. “Once you lose one or two off a squad that it effected like it did last year’s team – and we won’t do this in the season all the time, but most great teams and the good teams I’ve been a part of or that I’ve seen or talked to about, spring football is a physical battle. It’s that most days and that’s what we’ve made it this spring because of some added depth.”

In reference to injuries, Freeze said rising junior running back Jaylen Walton will not play Saturday, but rising sophomore wide receiver Quincy Adeboyejo will play.

Other Grove Bowl week activities include the 25th annual Chucky Mullins Courage Award ceremony Saturday at 8 a.m. The Ole Miss baseball team hosts Auburn in a weekend series at Swayze Field, and the women's tennis and women's golf teams will also be in action on campus this weekend.
