Outland Trophy Watch List

DALLAS, Texas
– Following a breakout freshman season in 2016, Ole Miss offensive lineman Greg Little has been named to the 2017 Outland Trophy Watch List released Thursday morning. The Rebel is one of 81 players on the list for the award given to the nation’s top interior lineman.

The list includes 24 offensive tackles, 21 defensive tackles, 19 centers and 17 offensive guards. Little is on the list along with 10 other linemen from the Southeastern Conference.

A native of Allen, Texas, Little made an immediate impact in his first season as a Rebel. He played in every game, while making five starts at left tackle. Throughout the 2016 campaign, he helped protect the Ole Miss quarterbacks that led the SEC and ranked 13th nationally in passing as a unit (314.9 ypg). The strong season earned him Freshman All-America honors by Rivals.com, and the coaches voted him first team Freshman All-SEC as well.

Entering the fall, Little is expected to be the Rebels’ starting left tackle. NFL.com has him rated as the 31st-best player in college football heading into the season, while Phil Steele credits Little a fourth team Preseason All-America honoree.

The Outland Trophy winner is chosen from three finalists who are a part of the annual FWAA All-America Team. The FWAA All-America Committee, after voting input from the entire membership, selects a 26-man first team and eventually the three Outland finalists. Committee members, then by individual ballot, select the winner. Only interior linemen on offense or defense are eligible for the award; ends are not eligible.

The list will be trimmed to six or seven semifinalists on Nov. 15. Six days later, three Outland Trophy finalists will be named by the FWAA. The winner of the 72nd Outland Trophy – named after the late John Outland, an All-America lineman at Penn at the turn of the 20th century, will be announced live on ESPN at The Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 7.
