BLOG: Rebels Battle Injuries on Defense

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss head football coach Hugh Freeze told reporters after Friday morning’s practice that the team had a good workout and made improvements, a common theme for the Rebels’ coach this preseason.

“We had a good day, maybe one of our better ones,” Freeze said. “We had some good team situations. We’re trying to make sure we cover every possible scenario. I thought it was a good day. We did some better things today and improved on some mistakes that we had made in earlier scrimmages.”

Freeze praised some of the team’s younger players – possible future stars – when recapping Wednesday evening’s scrimmage.

Players that stood out in the scrimmage included freshmen Victor Evans, Breeland Speaks, Rod Taylor, DeMarquis Gates, A.J. Moore and C.J. Moore, JUCO transfer Akeem Judd, sophomore Robert Conyers and junior Ben Still.

Backup quarterbacks Ryan Buchanan and DeVante Kincade both showed off valuable skills during the recent scrimmage.

“Ryan had a good scrimmage,” Freeze said. “Bo (Wallace) did not take many snaps. DeVante had some really exciting, good plays and had some on the other end of the spectrum, also. We just have to keep bringing him along. He definitely adds a different element for us. But they’ve all improved.”

Freeze noted that both backups will be available when needed and that the game situation would dictate which one would be called to duty.

On the injury front, junior Carlos Davis will be out for the season with a torn ACL he suffered during Wednesday’s scrimmage. He was penciled in as the top punt returner and a backup cornerback. He joins fellow defensive backs Tee Shepard and Chief Brown on the list of players expected to miss the 2014 season due to injuries. Junior defensive tackle Issac Gross missed Friday’s practice due to a lingering neck strain and will be held out until he’s healthy enough to return.

The candidates to replace Davis at punt returner include Trae Elston, Anthony Alford and Markell Pack.

Football coaches and players will be signing autographs and visiting with fans Saturday at the annual "Meet The Rebels Day" Presented By Cannon Motors. Doors will open to Rebel Kids’ Club Members (with up to two parents or guardians) at 11:30 a.m., at the east entrance of the facility, by the Grill at 1810. The general public may enter at noon through the south entrance, which faces the Track & Field complex. All fans should park in the Coliseum lot.
