OXFORD, Miss. – With raining coming down hard outside, the Ole Miss football team practiced indoors Monday at the Manning Center as it began installing prep work for its 2014 season opener against Boise State in Atlanta.

Head coach Hugh Freeze said the team went for 20 minutes today on Boise State, and will do more work toward the Broncos in the team’s walk through tonight. In regards to Monday’s practice, Freeze said he was a little disappointed by the way the team went about its energy, but there were some good things to take away from the day.

“Defensively, Christian Russell had an outstanding day,” Freeze said. “He’s coming on. Fadol Brown, this is the first day I really felt like he’s back to being healthy, and he looked good and did some nice things. The third-down competition was the energy I expect. It finished 11-9 (in favor of the defense). There was great back and forth in that deal. I saw some good things on both sides there.”

With the Rebels’ season opener just 10 days away, the position battles at kicker and center are drawing closer to completion. Freeze said both positions are too close to call at this point, but indicated there is a plan in place for each as of now.

“Right now (Andrew) Fletcher (is ahead),” said Freeze about the kicker position. “Fletcher would kick short-to-medium field goals right now. But it’s been (a) good (battle). All of them on a given day have done their share. He’s just probably been more consistent on those. If it was longer it would be one of the other two (Andy Pappanastos or Gary Wunderlich).

“Both Ben (Still) and Robert (Conyers) have earned the right to play. Who gets the majority of snaps will probably be sorted out after the first few games.”

Freeze said junior Fahn Cooper would get the start at right tackle.

With the season-ending injuries to defensive backs Carlos Davis and Tee Shepard, Freeze also talked about that position’s depth chart heading into the season.

“Mike Hilton went back out pretty much full time, as well as Senquez (Golson). Those two would probably be what you would consider starters now. Derrick Jones, Kendarius Webster and Kailo (Moore) are all getting reps with the second team.”

Ole Miss faces Boise State in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game on Aug. 28 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. For more information on the game and all the festivities going on around the game, go to the Rebels’ Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game webpage.
