OXFORD, Miss. - After their second scrimmage and two days off for the start of classes on Monday, the Ole Miss football team was back at it Tuesday on the practice fields adjacent to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

Head coach Hugh Freeze talked about what he saw on film from the second preseason scrimmage last Saturday.

"Justin Bell graded out pretty well, so did (Patrick) Junen.  Those two had a good day.  Some of the others we expected, Aaron (Morris) had a good day.  The running backs continue to impress, especially the young ones.   As for the quarterbacks, Bo (Wallace) graded out the highest.   Defensively, we didn't get many reps for C.J. (Johnson).   We tried to give Ralph Williams quite a few more to see if he can help us maybe get some more pressure off the edge.  He had a decent day.   Secondary wise, Louis Covington graded out the highest.  It's good to have him back there, because we are thin.  We'll need him."

Speaking of the defense, freshman Channing Ward got his first practice in with the team after greeting the fans at Meet the Rebels Day.  The coaches are quickly trying to bring the Under Armour All-American up to speed.

"He's swimming right now.  He looks the part.  He's in decent shape, but he doesn't know what he's doing right now," Freeze said.  "Coach (Chris) Kiffin and our defensive staff are working hard to see how much he can retain in a short amount of time.   We're glad he's out here, and he's going to be a valuable asset to us."

One member of the defensive front who continues to impress early on is Batesville's Isaac Gross.  Fans can expect to see a lot of the freshman this fall.  "He's going to play a lot," Freeze said.   "He loves to compete, and he's so quick and explosive."

Coach Freeze said he's still not ready to name one guy as the quarterback.

"We'll decide next week who's going to start the game," Freeze said.   "I am still dead set that both will play in the first couple games.  We'll see who has the most production in the drives and go from there."
