CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico—Ole Miss junior Beau Briggs posted a 1-under par 70 to lead the Rebels in the Opening Round of the Querencia Cabo Collegiate. As a team, Ole Miss carded a 7-over 291 to land in ninth place heading into the second round. No. 1 Oklahoma State leads the field after an 8-under 276 day.

The Rebels posted the best score among the SEC teams in the field, besting No. 2 Vanderbilt and No. 19 Arkansas. The Commodores and Razorbacks fired 296 to sit in a tie for 11th place.

Briggs, who is competing in his first tournament of the spring, sits in a seven-way tie for eighth place after working six birdies in his opening round in Mexico. In the fall, the Covington, Louisiana, native competed in all four tournaments for the Rebels, with his best coming in a top-5 finish at the Franklin American Mortgage Intercollegiate at The Grove after carding a 2-under 214. Today, Briggs began his shotgun start on the 14th hole with a par and from there would find two birdies and a bogey before making the turn to the first hole. Four of Briggs’ six birdies were found on par-4s, landing him in the top 10 in that category for the tournament.

Braden Thornberry checked in behind Briggs with a 2-over (73) day to land in a seven-way tie for 34th place. The junior began his day with a double bogey on the 10th hole, his first hole of the day, but quickly bounced back carding three birdies on four holes before the turn.

Chip Getz, Kerry Sweeney and Cecil Wegener all worked 3-over (74) rounds to sit in a 12-way tie for 41st place. Wegener, who is competing as an individual, found the first birdie of the day for the Rebels as he landed one on hole 15, a 538-yard par 5, his first hole of the day.

Ole Miss will continue its play tomorrow with a shotgun start beginning at 10 a.m. CT. The Rebels will be paired with players from No. 1 Oklahoma State, Houston and Rice.
