CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico— The Ole Miss men’s golf team held onto ninth place after a 6-over (290) day, one stroke better than its opening round at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate. Ole Miss is tied with Rice, who fell three places from their first round, in Mexico. No. 1 Oklahoma State continues to lead the field after a 2-under (282) day to sit at 10-under overall.

While the 15-team field holds 12 teams in the top 50 according to GolfStat rankings, the Rebels sit in front of No. 2 Vanderbilt, No. 14 Wake Forest, No. 17 Stanford, and No. 23 South Florida headed into the final round.

Junior Braden Thornberry was the driving force for the Rebels today after shooting 2-under (69) to sit even through 36 holes. The reigning NCAA Champion carded three birdies and one bogey to improve four strokes from his opening round. This moved Thornberry up 20 places to land in a seven-way tie for 14th, nine strokes behind the field leaders, Collin Morikawa of California and Matthew Wolff of Oklahoma State.

Ole Miss’ second day success comes from a distance as the Rebels worked the par 5s to 6-under through two days, tied for fifth among the field. Kerry Sweeney is the main catalyst of this. The senior is tied for second in this category with a 4.33 stroke average and today moved up 11 places after posting an even par 71 on day two. Beau Briggs, who was the frontrunner for Ole Miss on Sunday after a 1-under score, carded a 4-over day (75), a result of two birdies and six bogeys. Sweeney and Briggs are in a three-way tie for 30th heading into the final round.

The Rebels will conclude their play in Mexico tomorrow as they tee off at 9:30 a.m. CT with a shotgun start.

“We had a pretty good round going for most of the day, but let it get away from us down the stretch. This golf course will expose you if you start hitting it off line and are not committed to your game plan. We will be ready to have a great final round tomorrow.”
