Rebels Place 12th at Querencia Cabo Collegiate
March 6, 2018

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico— The Ole Miss men’s golf team traveled south of the boarder to compete in the Querencia Cabo Collegiate in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico where they finished in 12th place with a 291-290-299—880. No. 1 Oklahoma State owned the tournament with a 14-under 838 total.

Briggs was the leading force for the Rebels in the opening round on Sunday when he carded a 1-under par 70 to put Ole Miss 7-over standing in ninth place. The following day the Rebels were able to improve by one stroke, but held their ninth place with the help of reigning NCAA Champion, Braden Thornberry. Thornberry shot 2-under (69) to sit even through 36, moving up 20 places into 14th place.

In the final round, Ole Miss struggled to find a rhythm as the Rebels posted a 299, nine strokes over their previous round. Senior Kerry Sweeney and Thornberry were the frontrunners for Ole Miss today as they both carded 1-over (72). Thornberry’s round was seen to be steady carding only two bogeys and one birdie to place in a four-way tie for 12th overall. However, Sweeney’s day looked quite differently. The senior began his day with a birdie on his first hole, a 204 yard par 3, and then would go on to card three more birdies before ending on a triple-bogey, his first of the season. Sweeney’s 1-over (72) put him in a four-way tie for 29th place.

Checking in behind Thornberry and Sweeney is Briggs with a 5-over round placing him in a three-way tie for 42nd place overall with an 8-over tournament score of 221. Freshman Cecil Wegener, who was competing an individual, came in behind Briggs with a 223 tournament score, two stokes behind his career-low, to move up one place on the day finishing in a six-way tie for 53rd place.

The Rebels will continue their spring play next Sunday for a three-day tournament at the Lamkin San Diego Classic in San Diego, Calif.

Malloy’s Minute

“We really struggled as a team today dealing with adversity. On this golf course, if you start to lose confidence it can really spiral out of control on you. We have done a great job of keeping our composure so far this spring, but seemed to get away from that today. On a course like this and against the best teams in college golf, there is a very thin line between winning and losing. We will be better for having this experience moving forward. We wont let one round of golf define who we are. This good news is that we get right back into competition in San Diego and we will be ready to go!”
