– After 36 holes at the San Diego Country Club, the Ole Miss men’s golf team sits in eighth place (283-298—581) with one round to play in the Lamkin San Diego Classic. The Rebels opening round of 283 (-5) got them off to a strong start as they went out to defend their title.

In a 16-team field that includes 10 teams ranked in Golfstat’s top-50 national poll, No. 1 Oklahoma State holds a commanding lead at 23-under (270-283—553). No. 48 San Diego State is in second but 17 strokes off the pace after consecutive rounds of 285 (-3). The Rebels are ahead of three ranked teams heading into the final day. Ole Miss grinded out 116 pars amongst the five Rebels in the lineup, ranking second in the field.

Junior Braden Thornberry is 2-under (69-73—142) and tied for 12th to lead the Rebel golfers. Closely behind is Cecil Wegener who was consistent throughout the day, firing rounds of 73 and 72, respectively, to settle in at 1-over par. Beau Briggs (70-78—148) parred 26 of the 36 holes, second-most among the 96 tournament golfers, to get around the course. The junior’s day was highlighted by his 2-under 70 in round one. Senior Kerry Sweeney (71-78—149) and junior Josh Seiple (80-75—155) rounded out the Ole Miss lineup, while sophomore Chip Getz (71-76—147) finds himself in the middle of the pack (T47) competing as an individual.

After the morning round, the Rebels sat in solo possession of second place after a 5-under 283. Thornberry led the way with a 69 (-3) thanks to a stretch in which the reigning national champion recorded four birdies over six holes. His lone miscue was a bogey on the par 5 eighth, his 14th hole of the round. Briggs was closely behind with his 70 (-2), just one off his career best. After bogey on his second hole, the Covington, Louisiana, native bounced back with four birdies throughout the remainder of his opening 18.

Sweeney followed with an under-par round of his own (71). He closed the front nine with three birdies over the final five holes to combat of pair of bogeys to begin the side. Wegener held steady during his opening round, posting a tournament-high 15 pars that helped lead to a 1-over 73.

The Rebels could not continue the momentum into round two, shooting +9 as a squad. Wegener balanced four birdies with four bogeys to shoot a team-best 72 (E) and finished strong by recording all of his birdies over his final eight holes. A 1-over 73 by Thornberry kept him under par for the tournament as he used back-to-back birdies on No. 8 and No. 9 to fire a 35 on the front side. Seiple fired a 75 (+3) to improve from his first round.

Ole Miss will end its west coast swing tomorrow morning (March 13). Tee times for the final round begin at 10 a.m. CT (8 p.m. PT). For all Ole Miss Men's Golf news and information, follow the Rebels on Twitter at @OleMissMGolf, on Instagram at OleMissMGolf and on Facebook at Ole Miss Men’s Golf.

Malloy’s Minute
“We got off to a great start in round one, but unfortunately we weren’t able to follow that up,” said head coach Chris Malloy. “We had way too many sloppy golf shots and weren’t able to get any momentum coming home. We have a great opportunity to move up the leaderboard tomorrow, and I look forward to watching our guys compete.”
