CHULA VISTA, Calif. – With the help of 17 birdies and two eagles from the five-man lineup, the Ole Miss men’s golf team fired a 4-under 284 in the final round of the Lamkin San Diego Classic at the San Diego Country Club. The solid score proved to be the third best of the day, moving the Rebels up four spots on the leaderboard to land in fourth place (283-298-284—865).

No. 1 Oklahoma State (270-283-267—820) ran away with the tournament title by 32 shots, while Ole Miss finished ahead of seven other ranked teams. Braden Thornberry (69-73-70—212) recorded the 19th top-10 finish of his career. The Rebel junior dominated the par 5s throughout the week, going 7-under on them to rank second among the 96-player field.

Yesterday, head coach Chris Malloy mentioned that the Rebels had a great opportunity to move up the leaderboard. His squad responded and did just that by setting up multiple birdies throughout the day. All four of the scores used towards the team total featured at least four under-par holes per round. Thornberry and senior Kerry Sweeney fired final round 70s (-2) to lead Ole Miss, while junior Josh Seiple and freshman Cecil Wegener added even-par rounds of 72 to the overall team tally.

Thornberry took advantage of the par 5s on Tuesday, going 5-under on the four holes. The Olive Branch, Mississippi, native produced two eagles through his first eight holes by conquering the par-5 second and the par-5 eighth. He added a trio of birdies on the back nine, but five bogeys throughout the round prevented Thornberry from going low. Nonetheless, it was another impressive showing for the reigning national champion.

The Rebels tore up the back nine of the 7,033-yard course (par 72), combining for 15 birdies on the side. Wegener recorded a team-high four birdies on the back, making four straight from holes 14-17. Going 4-under over his last five holes, Wegener battled back to even par for the day and finished 1-over for the tournament (T22). Sweeney used a bogey-free back nine, along with three birdies, to post a 33 (-3) coming in and counter the 37 (+1) he shot on the front. It was the senior’s second under-par round of the 54-hole tournament, helping him tie for 32nd at 3-over (71-78-70—219).

After a rough opening 18, Seiple improved each round in San Diego. His final round of 72 (E) even featured a comeback in itself. The Castle Rock, Colorado, native suffered a double bogey on the second hole, but he answered by going 4-under over the next 12 holes (eight pars, four birdies). Three of Seiple’s four birdies occurred on the back nine; he drained a birdie putt on No. 10 before penciling in a deuce on the par-3 11th. Beau Briggs also birded the 10th, his lone one of the day, en route to a final round 74 (+2).

Ole Miss will take a week off before returning to action. Up next for the Rebel golfers is the Hootie at Bulls Bay (March 25-27) in Charleston, South Carolina. The Rebels will look to capture the tournament crown after finishing runner-up last year.

Malloy’s Minute
“I’m really proud of the way that this group battled through some early adversity,” said Malloy. “I challenged this group to compete and not let a few bad shots get them down. They really did an incredible job of that and got it going on the back nine. This round will give us the momentum that we’ve been looking for going forward.”
