Thornberry and Wegener Help Ole Miss Go Low
March 25, 2018

ROUND 1 RESULTS

AWENDAW, S.C.
– Junior Braden Thornberry and freshman Cecil Wegener combined to go 7-under in the opening round of the Hootie at Bulls Bay, and that’s what the Ole Miss men’s golf team posted (281) to sit in second place after the first 18 holes. Behind Thornberry’s 68 (-4) and Wegener’s career-low 69 (-3), the Rebels are three shots back of Missouri.

Ole Miss dominated the par 5s, going -10 on the holes to pace the 15-team field. Three of the five Rebels birdied the par-5 sixth, while four of them made birdie on the par-5 10th to get off to a fast start on the back nine. Both holes measure over 600 yards, but the length didn’t faze the Rebels. In total, 12 of the team’s 16 birdies came on par 5s.

A bogey-free round propelled Thornberry to a 4-under 68 and just one shot back of the lead. The defending national champion birdied four of the five par 5s and added 13 pars. Wegener was close behind at 3-under thanks to a 31 (-4) on the back nine. The strong finish helped the freshman post a 69, his best round as a Rebel by two strokes. His five birdies were the most on the team.

Senior Kerry Sweeney also produced an under-par round. He birdied three of his first 10 holes before back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 14 and 15 led to a 1-under 71. Josh Seiple contributed to the team score with a 73 (+1). The Castle Rock, Colorado, native made four birdies, but a triple bogey on the par-3 12th prevented him from finishing under par. Beau Briggs rounded out the scoring with a 77 (+5).

Entering day two, the Rebels are tied with No. 31 Kentucky, No. 34 Kent State and Iowa State. Ole Miss will begin the second round at 8 a.m. CT, teeing it up with Kent State and Georgia State.

Malloy’s Minute
“I’m happy with our start out there today,” said head coach Chris Malloy. “We have some things to clean up, but overall I was very pleased with our play and attitudes. We are looking forward to another solid round tomorrow to help put us in a position to win on Tuesday.”
