Thornberry Grabs Share of the Lead at The Hootie
March 26, 2018

AWENDAW, S.C. - On the second day of the Hootie at Bulls Bay, a hole-out eagle from 150 yards at No. 1 set up Braden Thornberry's vault up the leaderboard. The defending NCAA champion posted another round in the 60s, moving him to 7-under with a share of the lead heading into the final round.

As a squad, the Rebels got off to a hot start Monday morning. Ole Miss posted two eagles and 10 birdies on the front nine to move into sole possession of the lead at 13-under. However, the final six holes got the best of the Red and Blue, dropping them to fourth place after posting a team total of 291 (+3) for the day. Still 4-under for the tournament thanks to a 7-under 281 in round one, Ole Miss remains within striking distance and will enter the final 18 holes trailing leader Kent State (-10) by six shots. No. 31 Kentucky (-8) and Iowa State (-5) also sit ahead of the Rebels on the leaderboard.

For the second straight day, Thornberry led the charge. Along with his eagle on the par-4 first, he added two more birdies on the front nine for a 4-under 33. The Olive Branch, Mississippi, native started the back side strong with a birdie on the par-5 10th to move to 9-under for the tournament. Despite two bogeys over the final six holes, Thornberry posted a 3-under 69 to tie Kent State's Ian Holt for the lead at 7-under through 36 holes.

Redshirt-junior Josh Seiple was close behind Thornberry with a 2-under 70, moving him into red figures for the tournament (-1). He recorded four birdies over a six-hole stretch, finishing the round with five birdies and three bogeys. The solid 18 allowed Seiple to jump all the way up to a tie for 11th place and just six shots back of his teammate and tournament leader Thornberry.

Beau Briggs and Cecil Wegener signed their scorecards after shooting 76 (+4) to contribute to the team's score. Briggs had a pretty uneventful front nine, beginning with a bogey before rattling off eight straight pars. He shot 38 on both sides. The Covington, Louisiana, native birdied holes 11 and 12 to help keep the Rebels in the lead at the time. Meanwhile, Wegener followed Thornberry with an eagle of his own. From just off the green on the par-5 fourth, the freshman used the bump-and-run technique to chip in for an eagle 3. He started 2-under through eight holes. Kerry Sweeney added an up-and-down round of 78 (+6) that included three birdies.

Eighteen holes remain in the Hootie at Bulls Bay. The Rebels will tee off beginning at 7:50 a.m. CT Tuesday morning, six strokes back with a chance to still claim the title. Individually, Thornberry will start his round as the co-leader in search of becoming the first player in school history to reach double figures in medalist honors. He already holds the program standard with nine individual wins.

Malloy's Minute
"We got off to a good start and really had it going through 12 holes," said head coach Chris Malloy. "Unfortunately, we didn't handle the last stretch of holes like we would have liked, but overall we had many positives to reflect on today. We are still in a position to put together a good round tomorrow and get a victory."
