– The Ole Miss men’s golf team posted a final round 280 (-8), the second-lowest round of the day, to wrap up the Gary Koch Invitational at Gaston Country Club. Shooting their second under-par round of the tournament, the No. 34 Rebels finished in third place with a 54-hole total of 276-297-280—853 (-11) ahead of ranked opponents No. 17 Florida State (295-277-286—858) and No. 45 Virginia (293-286-285—864).

Entering the day in fourth place, Ole Miss leapfrogged the Seminoles behind under-par rounds from three Rebels. Cecil Wegener paced the Rebels for the second time on the 7,042-yard course with a 67 (-5), matching his personal best. The freshman nearly posted a mistake-free round as he tallied six birdies to go along with a lone bogey on the 228-yard par-3 eighth. With the help of another 67 he shot in yesterday’s opening round, Wegener finished with a career-low 54-hole total of 211 (67-77-67). Ending the competition at 5-under, Wegener placed in the top 10 for the second consecutive tournament.

Josh Seiple posted the second-best round of the day for Ole Miss, using a bogey-free 32 (-4) on the back nine to complete a round of 70 (-2). After making a pair of bogeys on the front nine, the redshirt junior bounced back to even with birdies on Nos. 10 and 13. He finished his round with consecutive birdies on his last two holes to move to 4-under (68-70-74—212) for the tournament and in a tie for 14th.

Braden Thornberry, the defending national champion and the current No. 1 ranked amateur in the world, fired his third straight under-par round to place third in the event. The Southaven, Mississippi, native signed his scorecard for a 71 (-1) with the help of a team-high 14 pars. On the 511-yard par-5 seventh hole, Thornberry made an eagle before using back-to-back pars to shoot a 34 (-2) on the front side. With a three-round score of 7-under (68-70-71—209), Thornberry led the Rebels for the fifth tournament in a row. In three of those events, he’s placed in the top five and now has 18 top-five finishes for his career.

Saving his best round for last, Kerry Sweeney shot an even-par 72. The Rebel senior balanced two bogeys with a pair of birdies on the front side before finding more consistency on the back nine. Sweeney recorded eight pars and one birdie on his way into the clubhouse, getting back to level par. He ended the tournament at 5-over (73-76-72—221), contributing to the team score all three rounds.

The Rebels led the field in par 5 scoring with a stroke average of 4.58, good enough for 25-under par. Ole Miss went 9-under on the holes during the final round to help move up the leaderboard. Alongside No. 28 Kentucky (278-277-274—829) and No. 11 Auburn (276-273-284—833), Ole Miss helped the SEC complete a sweep of the top three spots in the 13-team tournament. Auburn’s Trace Crowe earned medalist honors at 16-under (69-63-68—200), a one-shot victory over Chip McDaniel of Kentucky (66-69-66—201).

The Ole Miss golfers will return to action next week for their final tournament before heading to Sea Island, Georgia for the SEC Championship (April 25-29). The Rebels will compete in their home state, traveling to West Point for the Old Waverly Intercollegiate (April 16-17).

Malloy’s Minute
“I was very pleased with the way that these guys came out and competed today,” said head coach Chris Malloy. “We didn’t get off to an ideal start, and they really did a great job of hanging in there and waiting for their opportunity to strike. This group certainly knows how to step up and close out tournaments. Now, we just have to get back and figure out how to take that same mentality to each of the other rounds. We are playing some very good golf right now, and I look forward to us competing again next week.”
