ST. SIMMONS ISLAND, Ga.Junior Blake Morris carded a 1-over par 71 to lead the Ole Miss men’s golf team on day one of SEC Championships at the Sea Island Golf and Country Club Friday.

Morris, who has posted four top-five finishes this season, is currently tied for 21st place. The Rebels are tied with Florida for 13th with a team score of 292 heading into Saturday’s second round. No. 1 Alabama is in first place after carding an 8-under par score on day one.

“Most of our team didn’t play with confidence today,” Ole Miss head coach Ernest Ross said. “Some of our team members haven’t really mastered some of the shots needed for a course this difficult. We are playing in the toughest league in America, and we have to show we can play here. Today we didn’t. We worked really hard after the round to correct some flaws. We get an opportunity to show we learned something when we tee off tomorrow.”

Junior Joe Lewis, who carded three birdies in round one, is tied for 39th place with a score of 3-over 73. Senior Tom Brown and freshman Ben Wolcott are tied for 50th place, each posting a score of 4-over 74 in the first round. Freshman Noah West is currently tied for 65th place.

The Rebels will begin teeing off the second round at 8:10 a.m. tomorrow. The third and final round begins Sunday.
