Ole Miss Shoots Under Par to Climb Regional Leaderboard
May 15, 2018

BRYAN, Texas
– Behind rounds in the 60s by juniors Braden Thornberry (68) and Beau Briggs (69), the Ole Miss men’s golf team moved up the leaderboard on day two of the NCAA Bryan Regional at Traditions Club. Firing a 3-under 285 as a team, the Rebels jumped into the coveted fifth spot above the cut line and created some separation from sixth-place South Carolina.

Following tomorrow’s play, the top five teams will advance to the NCAA Championships at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma (May 25-30). Texas A&M remained at the top of the leaderboard following its second consecutive 279 (-9) on its home course. Inching closer to the Aggies was Clemson, shooting the best round of the tournament at 276 (-12). Baylor (282-288—570) and UCLA (288-288—576) played round two at even par to remain ahead of the Rebels. At 3-over (294-285—579) for the tournament, Ole Miss holds an eight-shot cushion over South Carolina (293-294—587) for fifth place with 18 holes remaining.

Beginning the round off the back nine, Ole Miss tore up the side with four Rebels combining to go 9-under. Thornberry posted a 33 (-3) before making the turn, while the trio of Briggs, Josh Seiple and Kerry Sweeney fired 34s (-2). The Rebels were able to maintain a solid score by keeping the big numbers out of play. After making five double bogeys as a team in round one, Ole Miss only had one hole that resulted in worse than a bogey. The team also tallied 16 birdies throughout the day to help post the under-par score.

Thornberry led the Rebels for the second straight day, producing a bogey-free round of 68 (-4) to move into a tie for third at 7-under (69-68—137) and just one shot back of the individual leaders (Chandler Phillips and Brandon Smith of Texas A&M). Following five consecutive pars to begin his round, the defending national champion lived up to his No. 1 world amateur ranking by making birdies on three of his next four holes. He added another birdie on the par-5 fifth to go along with eight pars to finish his round. Through 36 holes, Thornberry ranks second in par 5 scoring (-5) and has only made two bogeys. He fired his sixth round in the 60s out of nine career NCAA postseason rounds.

Briggs shot a 69 (-3) for the third time this season, tying a career low through his three seasons as a Rebel. After beginning the tournament with back-to-back double bogeys on Nos. 10 and 11, Briggs flipped the script today by recording birdies on both holes. The Covington, Louisiana, native tallied another birdie on the par-5 15th to move to 3-under through his first six holes. Briggs picked up 10 pars with a birdie to go bogey free over his final 11 holes to match his personal best round wearing the Ole Miss logo. Entering the day tied for 43rd, he made one of the biggest moves of the day by getting back to even par (75-69—144) for the tournament and in tie for 14th. After beginning the regional 4-over through two holes, he has gone 4-under over his last 34 holes. Through two rounds, Briggs has played the par 4s at 3-under to rank second out of the 75 players in par 4 scoring. His nine birdies over 36 holes also matches Thornberry for the team lead.

Seiple fired a 73 (+1) to improve by one stroke from yesterday’s opening round. The Castle Rock, Colorado, native notched three birdies during the four-hole stretch of Nos. 13-16 to make the turn at 2-under. Remaining at that number with four holes to play, three bogeys dropped him over par for the day. Nonetheless, Seiple posted a much-needed score for Ole Miss, contributing for the second consecutive day.

Sweeney, along with freshman Cecil Wegener, posted 75 (+3). The senior was 2-under through 10 holes and would have shot under par if not for a triple bogey on the par-4 third. However, his four-stroke improvement from the first round was a positive sign heading into the final day of play. Wegener’s round was a grind, and the freshman fought through it. He made two birdies to counter two bogeys over his final nine holes to shoot even par coming in (36).

Ole Miss will wrap up the NCAA Bryan Regional tomorrow, looking to lock up a spot to the NCAA Championships. Just like the previous two rounds, the Rebels will tee off No. 10 Wednesday morning (May 16) beginning at 8 a.m. CT. Ole Miss will be paired with fourth-place UCLA and sixth-place South Carolina.

Malloy’s Minute
“It was great to see our guys carry over the momentum from our back nine yesterday,” said head coach Chris Malloy. “We have five guys playing good golf right now, and I expect them to do the same tomorrow. We are excited to get out there and compete.”
