NASHVILLE, Tenn.—The Ole Miss men’s golf team battled the rain today in Nashville, Tennessee, as they began their third tournament of the season, the Franklin American Mortgage Intercollegiate at The Grove Golf Course.

Despite the continuous downpour of rain throughout the day, Ole Miss did not waver and carded a 1-under 287 to sit in first place and hold a five-stroke lead over host Middle Tennessee going into Round 2.

Four Rebels are in the top-10 after day one, three of whom contributed to the team’s overall score. Junior Josh Seiple led the Rebels in the opening round, shooting a 2-under 70 after two consistent sides, carding a 35 on both the front and the back. The score put Seiple atop the leaderboard with Tyler Johnson of Middle Tennessee. Seiple tallied five birdies to contribute to the team’s overall 16, helping Ole Miss lead the tournament in birdies through 18 holes of play.

Behind Seiple is fellow junior Beau Briggs and freshman Cecil Wegener who both checked in at even par (72) for the opening round. Briggs saw three bogeys early, but responded in the back 9 by improving four strokes from his front score (38-34). Wegener did the opposite. The Ridgeland, Mississippi native, worked to get to 2-under on the front 9 (34) and found himself 2-over on the back (38). The two will enter Round 2 in a five-way tie for fifth, shared with sophomore Chip Getz, who is competing as an individual. Getz’s 72 was a career low as a Rebel.

Junior Braden Thornberry, The Grove’s reigning champion, struggled to get things going and had to recover from a pair of double bogeys on the front 9. After the turn, he carded a 3-under 33 to finish the round 1-over (73), landing in a five-way tie for ninth.

Ole Miss will return to The Grove for Round 2 tomorrow beginning at 8:40 a.m. CT.

Malloy’s Minute
“It was certainly a great start to the tournament. I am very proud of our guys on a couple of fronts. I challenged them to get off to better starts in our first rounds and to be the toughest team when the conditions were less than ideal. They responded to both and found themselves in a great spot after Round 1. We didn’t do a very good job in windy conditions last time out, and they really stepped up today with the rain. I couldn’t be any prouder of this group.”
