NASHVILLE, Tenn.—The Ole Miss men’s golf team held their place atop the leaderboard in Round 2 at the Franklin American Mortgage Intercollegiate at The Grove and are 18 holes away from repeating as tournament champions.

After battling through the rain in Round 1, Ole Miss worked to card a 1-under 287, placing them in first place and a hefty five stokes ahead of Middle Tennessee going into the second day. With much clearer conditions today, the Rebels posted an even better score in Round 2 to hold their spot at the top. Ole Miss shot a 3-under 285 to lead the pack as Georgia Tech jumped ahead of the host Middle Tennessee after turning in a 12-under 276 to sit just one stroke behind the Rebels.

Junior Braden Thornberry was the driving force of the Rebels going low in the second round. Coming off an uncharacteristic first round where he shot 1-over (73), the reigning Grove champion responded today by carding seven birdies to contribute to a 6-under 66. This performance matches the FAMC Intercollegiate at The Grove tournament record and marks just two strokes above his career low. This allowed him to vault eight places on the leaderboard into first going into the final round.

Fellow junior Beau Briggs is seeing success in Nashville as well, but a little more consistent over the past two days. Briggs recorded an even par 72 in the opening round to place himself in a five-way tie for fifth before firing a 2-under 70 to move up two places on the leaderboard. The round of 70, which included four birdies in a five-hole stretch, tied his career low that he has recorded twice over the past two seasons.

Sophomore Brody Blackmon struggled to get into a rhythm in Round 1 after marking a 5-over 77 score, leaving himself in a five-way tie for 29th. However, Blackmon rallied in the second round by parring his first 10 holes of the day before countering two birdies with a bogey, resulting in an 18-hole total of 71 and a lift up the leaderboard.

For the second day in a row, sophomore Chip Getz turned in a career-low 72. Getz is competing as an individual, meaning his score will not contribute to the team’s overall tally. At even par for the tournament, Getz finds himself in the top 10 going into the final 18 holes.

Ole Miss will return to The Grove for the final round tomorrow beginning at 9:20 a.m. CT.

Malloy’s Minute

“These guys battled incredibly hard today. We didn’t get off to the greatest of starts and really flipped a switch in the middle part of our round that propelled us to another under par team score. If you can do that each day on the course, then you’re going to be in good shape. We are looking forward to the challenge ahead tomorrow. Braden continued to show why he is an elite player. He had a very clean round of golf today and was never in danger of making a big number.”
