NASHVILLE, Tenn.—Defending FAMC Intercollegiate at The Grove champion Braden Thornberry turned in a 7-under par (73-66-70--209) performance to repeat and secure the ninth individual title of his career.

Thornberry put on a show at the final round by birding the 18th hole of the tournament to secure the victory by one stroke over Liberty’s Mickey DeMorat. The birdie on the final hole marked his 16th of the tournament to lead in that category among all participants. Thornberry’s finish broke the tournament record that he previously owned after carding a 5-under 211 in 2016.

“I am very proud of Braden for fighting through his round of golf today and getting another victory” said head coach Chris Malloy. “This is the second time in three tournaments that he has birdied the final hole to win. That shows you what kind of competitor he is.”

The team tournament title was won by Georgia Tech who recorded a 12-under 852 to claim the title eight strokes over Ole Miss. The Rebels came in second after shooting even on the day to hold their 4-under (287-285-288—860) that they shot through the first two rounds. This score created a large gap of 15 stokes between themselves and the third place honoree, Kennesaw State.

“Overall it was a very good tournament for us. Anytime that you can put yourself in a position to win in the final round you know you’re doing a lot of things right,” said Malloy. “We give credit to Georgia Tech for putting together a tremendous round of golf today. We will take a lot of positives from this week and try to build on that going into our final event in the fall.”

Junior Beau Briggs played a large role in the contribution to the team’s overall tally on the tournament after shooting three consistent rounds. Briggs shot even par at the beginning and the end of the tournament and with the help of 2-under score in Round 2 totaled a new career-low of 214 (previously 216) for 54 holes. This score landed him in a tie for fifth with Marcus Byrd of Middle Tennessee.

Freshman Cecil Wegener too found a new career-low 18 after finishing the tournament with his first eagle as a Rebel to card a 1-under 71. This performance contributed to his 5-over finish of 221, a new career-low 54-hole score. Wegener walked away in a six-way tie for 20th, also owned by sophomore Chip Getz, who was competing as an individual. Getz worked back-to-back even-par 72s in the first two rounds, new career-lows for 18, and an end result of 221, a new career-low 54-hole total.

Ole Miss will enjoy two weeks off before heading across the Pacific to defend another tournament title at the Princeville Warrior Invitational located in Kauai, Hawaii beginning Oct. 29.
