LOS CABO, MEXICO – Ole Miss sophomore Blake Morris and freshman Forrest Gamble both fired a 1-over par 73 to help the Rebels to a three-shot lead in the first round of the Querencia Cabo Collegiate on Sunday.
Gamble and Morris both turned in a 1-over 73 and are tied for fifth overall after the first round at the Querencia Cabo Golf resort located near the Sea of Cortez in Mexico. Sophomore Joe Lewis carded a 2-over 74 and is tied for 12th, while junior Tom Brown and freshman Connor Davis both fired a 4-over 76 to tie for 25th overall.
"It was really windy today and the course is really different from what we play most of the time,” said Ole Miss head coach Ernest Ross. “It is a desert course, with little patches of green grass for fairways and then desert everywhere else. One bad tee shot will result in a possible double bogey or worse. It can be really stressful and nerve racking to play this kind of golf course. It is tough visually because there are no trees with which to define fairways and it makes seeing your target a real challenge. We played well as a team today and can't wait to get back at it tomorrow."
Ole Miss totaled a 296 and leads SEC rivals Kentucky by three shot heading into tomorrow’s second round. Follow the Rebels all season on twitter at @OleMissMGolf and on facebook at www.facebook.com/OleMissMGolf.
