Ole Miss Wins Rain-Shortened Querencia Cabo Collegiate Rebels Second Victory Of The Fall
Oct. 16, 2012
LOS CABO, MEXICO –Ole Miss sophomore Blake Morris and freshman Forrest Gamble both fired a 1-over par 73 in Sunday’s first round at help the Rebels to a win in the rain-shortened Querencia Cabo Collegiate in Los Cabo, Mexico.
The Rebels held a three-shot lead over SEC-rival Kentucky after Sunday’s first round before rain from Hurricane Paul washed out the final two rounds and gave Ole Miss its second victory of the fall. Gamble and Morris both tied for fifth after carding a 1-over par at the Querencia Cabo Golf resort located near the Sea of Cortez in Mexico. It marked Morris’ third top-five finish of the fall and the first for Gamble in his young career.
"I am really excited for our young team,” said Ole Miss head coach Ernest Ross. “To win this prestigious tournament on the first try is a great testament to our golf skills and adaptability. We played really well the second round, going 1-under through 12 holes, in windy, rainy conditions, but didn't get to finish the round. We were declared winners based on our first round score, which was the only round we finished. Our players exceeded my expectations and it was a great win for us."
Sophomore Joe Lewis carded a 2-over 74 and is tied for 12th, while junior Tom Brown and freshman Connor Davis both fired a 4-over 76 to tie for 25th overall.
Next up, Ole Miss will compete in the final tournament of the fall at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate beginning Oct. 27. Follow the Rebels all season on twitter at @OleMissMGolf and on facebook at www.facebook.com/OleMissMGolf.
