Kauai’i, Hawaii—The Ole Miss men’s golf team traveled across the country to compete in their final tournament of the fall season at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational played at Princeville Makai Golf Club. The Rebels worked a 6-under score of 282, to finish the opening round in eighth place. No. 40 Louisville leads the tournament with a 22-under 266.

Senior Kerry Sweeney led the Rebels with his best round of the year after shooting 3-under (69), a result carding three birdies through his first nine holes and staying strong until the end.

Junior Braden Thornberry, the tournament’s defending champion, carded a 2-under 70 to put himself in an eleven-way tie for 23rd. Thornberry’s score came from his first nine holes, where he worked three birdies and a bogey before playing his final nine holes at even par. This score is one stroke under Thornberry’s opening round score last year at the Warrior Princeville Invitational.

Coming off the best tournament of his career, Beau Briggs continued his hot play with another under-par round. The Covington, Louisiana, native tallied three birdies to counter a couple of bogeys to fire a 1-under 71. Sophomore Brody Blackmon was steady, parring his first seven holes. The consistent start was a sign of his day as he made 16 pars on his way to a 72 (E). Josh Seiple recorded a rare eagle on the par-4 14th and shot 33 (-3) on the back nine before settling for a 1-over 73.

Competing as individuals, sophomore’s Chip Getz and Ben Reichert finished within one stroke of one another. Getz led the Rebels in birdies with five, resulting in a 2-over (74) finish, landing in a nine-way tie for 70th. Reichert worked for a 73 (+1), the result of four bogeys and three birdies, to put him in a sixteen-way tie for 54th.

Ole Miss will return to the Princeville Makai Golf Club for Round 2 tomorrow beginning at 1:00 p.m. CT.

Malloy’s Minute

“We were not quite sharp enough around the greens to put together a great team score. We didn’t take advantage of the par-5s like we have done so far this fall, and that really hurts us. We just have to be a little bit sharper the next two rounds, and we will be in good shape.”
