Kauai’i, Hawaii—Halloween did not spook the Ole Miss golf team in its final round of the fall season at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational. The Rebels cared an 8-under round (280) to contribute to a season-best 23-under (841) score landing them in seventh place. The title belonged to No. 40 Louisville after shooting a 56-under 808.

Senior Kerry Sweeney led the Rebels at the Makai Princeville Golf Club after turning in a career-best 12-under (204) total, the fourth-lowest 54-hole score in Ole Miss history. This was the result of 3-under 69 shot in Round 1, a career-low 64 (-8) in the second round and a 1-under 71 shot today that included his first eagle of his senior campaign. Sweeney ended in a three-way tie for eighth, marking the second top-10 finish of his career.

Sweeney was not the only Rebel to find personal accolades across the country. Junior Beau Briggs turned in a career-low 5-under 211 to land in a two-way tie for 30th with Lee Detmer of Wake Forest. Briggs worked a pair of 1-under 71s on the front and back end of the tournament, but was able to match a career-best 69 (-3) in the middle. He was one of four Rebels to record at least six birdies throughout the final round.

Fellow juniors Braden Thornberry and Josh Seiple saw the course similarly the last two days. Thornberry entered the second round three strokes ahead Seiple after an opening-round 70. Both Rebels worked a 1-over 73 in Round 2 followed by a 3-under 69 to end the tournament. Thornberry’s best 18 came from his pedal-down mentality in his last nine holes, birding five of them. Thornberry ended the fall 4-under (212), landing in a nine-way tie for 32rd. Seiple’s best round was on the last day as well; he carded his third eagle of the season, combined with four birdies, to tally a 1-under 215 to end in a three-way tie for 55th.

Another career-best tournament came from sophomore Chip Getz, who competed as an individual. The Paradise Valley, Arizona, native carded a career-low 5-under 67 two days in a row to turn in a career-best 8-under 208. Over three days, Getz made 19 birdies, fifth most from an individual at the tournament. Also competing as an individual was fellow sophomore Ben Reichert. Reichert began his tournament 1-over, and then went on to find his first eagle as a Rebel to turn in a 74 (+2) in Round 2. Today, Reichert matched his career-low 18 with a 1-under 71, with the help of seven birdies, to total a career-best 218, ending in a four-way tie for 72nd.

The Warrior Princeville Invitational concluded the fall season for the Rebels. Ole Miss will return to the course Feb. 16, 2018 when they travel to Houston, Texas to compete in the All-American Intercollegiate.

Malloy’s Minute

“I was very proud of the way our guys finished the round today. We were once again struggling as a team midway through, and they dug down and finished strong to move up the leaderboard. We did not have our best stuff this week for sure, but managed to beat some quality teams. We will get into the offseason and figure out what we need to do individually to be better when the spring season comes around. I love this group and know that our best golf is ahead of us this spring.”
