Thornberry’s Second-Round 64 Highlights PGA Run at Sea Island
Nov. 19, 2017

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga.—Ole Miss Men’s golfer Braden Thornberry spent the week competing in his third career PGA Tour event, as he took on The RSM Classic at the Sea Island Golf Club. Thornberry’s career-best 64 in Round 2 highlighted the weekend, leading him to finish 3-under (72-64-69-74—279) and in a tie for 61st.

Thornberry, No. 1 in the Golfweek/ rankings, began the tournament at the Plantation Course carding an even par 72, the result of three birdies paired with three bogeys, to sit in a tie for 95th with fellow PGA Tour Rebel, Jonathan Randolph. This consistent play set Thornberry up for his best round in a PGA Tour event.

The Ole Miss junior opened his second day at the Seaside Course with a birdie after sinking a 34-foot putt on a 418-yard, par 4. Thornberry went on to add six more birdies and one bogey, resulting in a 6-under (64) score, breaking his previous career-low on the PGA Tour (65 at the FedEx St. Jude Classic). This round also marked the fifth-best round of 64 or better on the PGA Tour by an amateur since 1983. After 54 holes, the reigning NCAA Champion ascended 72 places on the leaderboard, making the cut in a professional event for the second time in his career.

Thornberry’s third round began a little differently as the Rebel struggled to find the fairway on his third hole, carding his first double bogey of the tournament. He responded tallying two birdies before the turn and added another on the 10th hole to come out with a 1-under (69) score. This put Thornberry sitting 7-under on the tournament, placing him in a tie for 33rd headed into the final day.

A windy final round came without a birdie for Thornberry, as he carded an uncharacteristic two bogeys and a double bogey to finish his third PGA event 3-under.

“I didn’t finish this week exactly how I wanted to, but it was still a positive week,” said Thornberry. “Like I said last week, I am looking to gain experience from these events. It was another solid week and I am looking forward to what is next.”
