Thornberry Looking to Reclaim Jones Cup Title
Jan. 25, 2018

SEA ISLAND, GA. -- Ole Miss’ Braden Thornberry fired a three-round 4-under par 212 to win the prestigious Jones Cup Invitational last year. Tomorrow, he tees off looking to reclaim his title.

Beginning with the inaugural tournament in 2001, the 54-hole, three-day, individual stroke-play event is played at Ocean Forest Golf Club. The par 72, 7,321-yard course will host a field that features 78 of the country’s top amateur golfers with Thornberry teeing off at 9 a.m. CT alongside fellow SEC golfer Theo Humphrey and Dawson Armstrong of Lipscomb.

Last year, Thornberry fired a 5-under 67 in the opening round, claiming one of the tournament’s four eagles on the 560-yard par-5 No. 3. His next 18 holes did not come at ease, battling cold and rainy conditions, but an even-par 72 allowed him to hold a comfortable six-stroke lead heading into the final round.

On the final day of the 2017 Jones Cup, Thornberry got off to a hot start by posting birdies on holes No. 1 and 3, but would finish the front nine at even-par. On the back nine, the Rebel golfer strung together four pars and posted a birdie on the 562-yard par-5 No. 14 before finishing with a 1-over 73 to win by five strokes.

Thornberry’s will again look to hold his title that joins a list of champions ranging from current and future PGA Tour stars such as, DJ Trahan, Gregg Jones, Nicholas Thompson, Luke List, Kyle Stanley, Patrick Reed, John Peterson and Justin Thomas. He will try to become the first golfer to win the prestigious tournament twice.
