Cecil Wegener Named SEC Freshman of the Week
Feb. 21, 2018

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-- After helping Ole Miss to its third-place finish at the All-American Intercollegiate this past weekend, Cecil Wegener has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.

Wegener, a native of Ridgeland, Mississippi, has competed in four out of five tournaments for the Rebels this season. His third-best score came in Ole Miss’ spring opener this weekend as he shot a 224 (73-79-72) to finish 8-over for a five-way tie for 71st place.

“Cecil has worked extremely hard to put himself in a position to succeed. He continues to challenge himself to have a positive mindset each and every time out on the course,” head coach Chris Malloy said. “He has a very bright future as an Ole Miss Rebel, and we are glad to have him as a part of this family.”

Wegener joined Ole Miss as a six-time letterwinner at Jackson Prep where he produced a 70.0 stroke average. He tied for runner-up at the 2016 Mississippi Junior Amateur, qualified for the 2016 A.S. Junior Amateur and finished in second place in the 2016 Mississippi Boys Amateur. The summer before his fall campaign, Wegener teamed up with fellow Rebel Charlie Miller to win the 2017 Magnolia Amateur with a 54-hole total of 6-under.

Since becoming a Rebel, Wegener has found one top-20 finish after carding a 221 (72-78-71) at the FAMC Intercollegiate at The Grove. The tournament included a career-best 18 of 1-under (71) in his final round with the help of a rare eagle on the 18th hole.
