OXFORD, Miss—The Ole Miss men’s golf team is set to tee off in its second tournament in 2018 as they head south of the boarder to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The Rebels will compete in the Querencia Cabo Collegiate (March 4-6) for the fourth year in a row under head coach Chris Malloy.

The three-day tournament will be held at the Par 71, 6,928-yard Querencia Country Club and will feature a 16-team field. Eight competing teams are currently ranked in the top 20, according to Golfstat’s rankings, including No. 1 Oklahoma State and No. 2 Vanderbilt. The Rebels will tee off on Sunday, March 4 at 10 a.m. CT with a shotgun start.

Ole Miss’ lineup for the Querencia Cabo Collegiate will include senior Kerry Sweeney, juniors Beau Briggs, Josh Seiple and Braden Thornberry, and sophomore Chip Getz. Freshman Cecil Wegener will be competing as an individual. Briggs is the only newcomer to the lineup, as all others were seen in the spring opener at the All-American Intercollegiate.

The Rebels began their spring season strong at the All-American Intercollegiate as they used two season-low team totals over three days to finish in third place behind No. 3 Baylor and No. 8 Auburn. Reigning NCAA Champion Braden Thornberry was the driving force behind Ole Miss’ success out of the gate as he worked a runner-up finish after tallying a 13-under score (203), tying himself for the third lowest 54-hole total in school history.

Seiple will too enter Mexico off of a hot start. The Castle Rock, Colorado, native carded a 210 (-6) to finish four strokes better than his previous career low and land him in a three-way tie for 11th place. Sweeney and Getz landed a seven-way tie for 28th place, while Getz was the leading force for Ole Miss on the Par-4’s.

Four of the five Rebels played in last season’s Querencia Cabo Collegiate. Seiple and Thornberry each posted even-par 214 over the three days. Seiple rolled in six birdies to post a team-best score of 69 in the third and final round to tie for 28th with Thornberry. The pair help lead Ole Miss to a 12th place finish, besting No. 5 Georgia, California and Rice. Sweeney (81-78-71—230) improved each round of the tournament, posting an even-par 71 in the final round. Competing as an individual, Briggs posted a final round 77 (+6) to finish with a tournament total of 228.

Malloy’s Minute
