– After one week off, the Ole Miss men’s golf team returns to action this weekend as the Rebels begin play at the 17th annual Hootie at Bulls Bay. The 54-hole tournament runs March 25-27 at Bulls Bay Golf Club in Awendaw, South Carolina, just north of Charleston.

The Rebels will battle 14 other teams, including seven ranked in Golfstat’s top 50. No. 9 Auburn, No. 31 Kentucky, No. 43 Missouri and defending champion South Carolina (No. 37) join No. 41 Ole Miss as representatives from the Southeastern Conference that will tackle the par 72 (7,220) course. Tee times begin at 9:50 a.m. CT Sunday for Ole Miss.

Beau Briggs, Josh Seiple, Kerry Sweeney, Braden Thornberry and Cecil Wegener will tee it up for Ole Miss. The five Rebels made up the lineup the last time out (March 12-13), placing fourth in a strong field at the Lamkin San Diego Classic. Thornberry, the No. 16 golfer in the country according to Golfstat, shot 4-under (69-73-70—212) to secure his 19th career top-10 finish. Wegener followed with a career-low 217 (73-72-72) that earned him SEC Freshman of the Week honors for the second time this spring.

Ole Miss will compete in the Hootie at Bulls Bay for the fourth time in program history. The Rebels placed ninth in 2011 and 2012 before finishing runner-up at last year’s event. While Ole Miss took second as a team, two Rebels finished atop the individual leaderboard. Ben Wolcott captured medalist honors by posting a career-low three round score of 12-under par 204 (67-68-69) to win his second tournament of the season. One stroke back was Thornberry, who began the event with an opening-round 66 (-6) before firing 69 (-3) and 70 (-2) in the final two strolls around the course. Seiple and Sweeney also contributed to the second-place finish by tying for 51st with a 54-hole total of 221.

Malloy’s Minute
“We are excited to build on the momentum that we built in San Diego,” said head coach Chris Malloy. “I know that this group is excited to get back into tournament play. We will need to work hard to have a good positive mindset and handle the adversity that we know we will face.”

About The Course
Any description of the Bulls Bay Golf Club must be prefaced by a brief discussion of the overall design philosophy behind this Mike Strantz creation located just north of historic Charleston, overlooking its namesake body of water and the Atlantic Ocean. Because of its coastal setting, Bulls Bay plays as differently as the winds that sweep across its fairways and dunes. As is the case at so many of golf’s great links courses, how one plays each hole is predicated on the wind conditions on a particular day. The course measures 7,220 yards from the tips. The front nine consists for three par 5s to become a par 37, while the back has a trio of par 3s for a par 35.
