OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss men’s golf team will travel to St. Simmons Island, Ga., this weekend to compete in the SEC Championships at the Sea Island Golf Club.
The 6,898 yard, par 70 course has hosted the SEC Championships since 2001. The three-round event, which begins on Friday and runs through Sunday, features some of the premier teams in the nation as over half of the field is ranked in the top 25 including No. 2 Alabama, No. 11 Florida and No. 13 Georgia.
“It is always an exciting time to get to play the SEC Championships,” said Ole Miss head coach Ernest Ross. “Our players love the course and the challenges that it presents. There aren’t many courses in America quite like Seaside. It requires some special skills unique to this course and region. We have been preparing and are ready for the test.”
Sophomore Blake Morris leads the Rebels with a 73.08 stroke average heading into the SEC Championships. The Waterbury, Conn., native has seen a successful second year in Oxford compiling four top-five finishes including a third place finish at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate in which he fired a season-best round of 67 and 54-hole best of 207.
Junior Tom Brown has also been a bright spot for the Rebels this season, highlighted by his performance in the Mason Rudolph Championship where he finished sixth and shot a career best 54-hole score of 210. Sophomore Joe Lewis has collected three top-20 finishes this season, including a tie for 12th at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
The lineup is rounded off with freshman duo Connor Davis and Forrest Gamble. Both had career days at the rain-shortened Querencia Cabo Collegiate in which Gamble tied for fifth and Davis finished in tie for 24th.
