Men's Golf Earns Berth to NCAA Regional
May 2, 2018

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – For the 11th time in program history, the Ole Miss men’s golf team has earned a trip to the NCAA Regional Championships. The Rebels, No. 31 in Golfweek’s national rankings and No. 32 Golfstat’s national poll, will be the sixth seed at the Bryan Regional (May 14-16).

“We are really excited to be selected to NCAA Regionals,” said head coach Chris Malloy. “This tournament berth is a testament to the hard work the guys have put in throughout the season. Now, it’s time to prepare as we embark on our quest for a national championship.”

The entire field for the NCAA Championships was revealed during a live selection show on Golf Channel, which will broadcast the national championship at the end of the month. Eighty-one teams and 45 individuals were split up among six regional sites: Stockton, California; Kissimmee, Florida; Raleigh, North Carolina; Columbus, Ohio; Norman, Oklahoma; Bryan, Texas.

Ole Miss will battle 12 other teams at Traditions Club, the home of Texas A&M. Joining the Rebels in Bryan will be the top-seeded Aggies, Baylor, Clemson, Kentucky, UCLA, South Carolina, San Francisco, Georgia, Mississippi State, UNC Wilmington, Northern Colorado and Bradley.

The Rebels earned their berth by ranking in the top 50 of national rankings throughout the year. Playing in 11 tournaments, Ole Miss finished in the top five in seven of them. Moreover, the Rebels recorded five top-three finishes, including a win at the Hootie at Bulls Bay (March 25-27). The victory at The Hootie came via comeback as Ole Miss erased a six-shot deficit with a school-record 269 (-19) in the final round.

Returning with the Rebels to NCAA postseason play is the defending national champion, Braden Thornberry. The junior, ranked No. 1 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, has led the Rebels throughout the season with four individual victories. Up for the Fred Haskins Award (reigning award winner), the Ben Hogan Award and the Jack Nicklaus Award, Thornberry ranks fifth nationally in Golfstat's adjusted scoring average (69.89).

Ole Miss makes an NCAA Regional for the eighth time in the past 12 years. The Rebels have earned a spot in three out of Malloy’s four seasons guiding the program. Last year, Ole Miss used strong play at the Austin Regional to advance to the NCAA National Championship for the first time since 2001.

In order to get back to the NCAA Championships, the Rebels will need to finish in the top five at the College Station Regional. The 2018 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships will be held at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma (May 25-30).
