Braden Thornberry Leads Team USA to Victory in Walker Cup
Sept. 11, 2017

LOS ANGELES, Calif.— Ole Miss junior Braden Thornberry worked a Hollywood finish as he competed with the nation’s top amateur golfers to help Team USA to a 19-7 victory over Team Great Britain and Ireland in the 46th Walker Cup Match at Los Angeles Country Club.

Thornberry began his weekend in a singles match against Harry Ellis, the 2017 British Amateur champion. He battled to remain up by one before the turn, but Ellis won three holes in a six-hole stretch to lead by two with five to play. However, Thornberry finished strong by claiming four of the last five holes to secure a 2-up victory. Saturday’s win helped Team USA to an 8-4 lead entering the second day of the Walker Cup.

Sunday, Thornberry competed in a foursome round followed by a singles round. Doc Redman of Clemson University partnered with Thornberry for the morning foursome as they competed against Jack Singh Brar and Scott Gregory of Great Britain and Ireland. Thornberry and Redmond fell by two, but fortunately Thornberry did not need to play all 36 holes in a day as he went on that afternoon to dominate in a singles match. The Olive Branch, Mississippi, native competed against Paul McBride of Ireland in a match that ended after 13 holes as Thornberry cruised to a 6&5 win. This personal victory brought Team USA within 1.5 points of their 36th victory in the Walker Cup to take a 36-9-1 lead in the all-time series.

“Playing in the Walker Cup is always going to be an awesome experience and an honor, but being able to say that you are on the winning Walker Cup team makes it even that much more special. I just want to thank all my teammates and Captain Miller for making it all possible,” Thornberry said. “We had a goal at the beginning of the week. That goal was to be able to bring the cup home, and we were able to do that.”

Thornberry did not take on the Cup alone as head coach Chris Malloy joined the All-American to witness him represent his country in one of the most famous events in amateur golf.

“I am so proud of Braden and the way that he handled himself on amateur golf’s biggest stage. He was ready for the moment just as he was when he won the NCAA Championship,” said Malloy. “He continues to impress me each time he steps onto the golf course. I am so glad that he is an Ole Miss Rebel!”

While Thornberry has been across the country representing the Rebels and the United States of America, the rest of the Ole Miss golf team has been battling it out in qualifying rounds for who will start come Sept. 25 for their first tournament of the 2017-18 season.
