OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss men’s golf team has added one of the nation’s top players - Blake Morris of Waterbury, Conn. - to its program, as the junior standout signed a national letter of intent to join the Rebels beginning in the fall of 2011 head coach Ernest Ross announced Wednesday.
While he is from Connecticut, Morris attends Berkeley Preparatory School in Tampa, Fla., so he can play golf year round.
“We are very excited about having Blake become part of the Ole Miss family,” Ross said. He was highly-recruited and got significant interest from No. 2 ranked Oklahoma State (2010 NCAA runner-up) and No. 1 ranked Florida, among others.”
Morris is currently ranked No. 62 in junior golf, but he recently started playing more amateur tournaments. He finished third in the St. Augustine Amateur, which included a field of 90 players. He has numerous top 10 finishes in AJGA and top junior events.
“Blake probably has the best short game of any player we have recruited at this time in his golf career,” Ross added. “He is very accurate off the tees and is a great chipper and putter. He is confident and hard-working. Blake has competed against the best in junior and amateur golf and held his own in pressure situations.”
The Rebels, who posted two top-five finishes in the fall, will begin the spring Feb. 12 at the Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.
