OXFORD, Miss. -- More than 700 fans came out to the new Ole Miss Indoor Tennis Center Saturday to watch the Ole Miss men's tennis team kick off the 2018 season, and the Rebels didn't disappoint, defeating Southern Mississippi (5-2) and Troy (4-0).

In the morning match against Southern Miss, the Rebels dropped the doubles point, but responded with singles wins on courts 1-5 from Gustav Hansson, Tim Sandkaulen, Zvonimir Babic, Fabian Fallert and Grey Hamilton, to take the match 5-2.

In the afternoon match against Troy, the Rebels came out firing in doubles and swept all three to go up 1-0. The Trojans tested the Rebels in singles, but Hansson was not one of those who faced much trouble, winning in straight sets for the second match in a row. He gave the Rebels a 2-0 lead and then Fallert erased an early second-set deficit to finish off his opponent 6-3, 6-4 for the 3-0 lead. Freshman Cotter Wilson got his first start in a dual match and he delivered the final point, winning 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6 singles to clinch it.

One week after arriving in Oxford from New Zealand, freshman Finn Reynolds saw his first action with the Rebels and went 1-1 in doubles with Hamilton and lost a tough three-setter in singles against Southern Miss.

At the net with Head Coach Toby Hansson
"In the first match, we responded well after losing the doubles point and got the crowd behind us in singles. In the second match after winning the doubles point, I challenged the guys to respond and keep the energy level up, and they did a great job. When you're down, it's easier to get fired up, but it's tougher when you have the lead. Overall, we are very happy with the effort to come away with two wins today."

On Troy
"We were tested in singles against Troy. They played well and challenged us in a couple second sets. Fabi had to turn it around to win his match and set up Cotter for the clinch. Cotter didn't play like it was his first dual match. He looked comfortable out there and was playing at a very high level."

On the Crowd
"We had a great turnout today. I am blown away by how many people came out. It was an unbelievable atmosphere, and the guys really enjoyed playing in front of the fans. That helped us, especially in the first match after we lost the doubles."

On Freshman Finn Reynolds
"Finn has a lot of potential. He has a really nice-looking game with a lot of upside. It's extremely difficult to step into this type of environment in a short amount of time, but he'll bounce back. He has many more matches in his career here and we are looking forward to it."

Freshman Cotter Wilson
"It was an awesome atmosphere! It was my mom's birthday this week, and they were planning to go somewhere else, but then decided to come up to watch me play my first match. Some of my friends from school were here as well. It was awesome! The first couple of games I was a little nervous, but once I got a few games under my belt, I was fine."

On the second set and closing it out
"I got up 4-1 and then he got a break back. I had a deuce point at 5-3 to win the match right after Fabi won his, and I didn't get it. I was lucky to serve it out at love at 5-4."
