Rebels Top No. 15 Virginia at ITA Kick-Off

Jan. 28, 2018

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – After a tough loss in the first round of the ITA Kick-Off, the Ole Miss men's tennis team bounced back Sunday with a 4-1 win against No. 15 Virginia in the consolation match at the Boars Head Sports Club.

Virginia has won the three straight NCAA titles and has not lost many matches at home during the last decade.

The Rebels (5-1) took the doubles point and then picked up straight set singles wins from senior Grey Hamilton at No. 5, freshman Cotter Wilson at No. 6 and the clincher from senior Gustav Hansson at No. 1.

Hansson and Zvonimir Babic claimed a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles and then Hamilton and Filip Kraljevic defeated Jefferson Dockter and Gianni Ross 7-5 at No. 3 to clinch the opening point.

Virginia tied the match when Aswin Lizen topped 14th-ranked Tim Sandkaulen 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.

That would be it for the Cavaliers though. Hamilton finished off Kyrylo Tsugura 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5 to hand the Rebels the lead again, and then Wilson beat Dockter 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6 to make it 3-1.

With the Rebels in third sets on courts three and four, Hansson made sure neither match would be necessary as he battled back in the second set to close out a 6-4, 6-4 win against Ross at the top spot.

Quick Hits
• The Rebels are now 5-1 on the season.
• That marked the Rebels first ever win against Virginia in five meetings
Gustav Hansson improved to 7-2 overall, 4-1 at No. 1 singles
• Hansson and Zvonimir Babic improved to 4-1 at No. 2 doubles
Grey Hamilton and Filip Kraljevic teamed up for just the second time and are now 2-0

At the net with Head Coach Toby Hansson
“We didn’t play our best in doubles today, but found a way to get the job done. In singles, we competed and played better than Saturday. It was good to see Gus turn the second set around and close out the match like that. We are heading back to Oxford with a positive feeling and that is important for the team heading into next weekend’s home matches against Cornell and Baylor.”
