CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Ole Miss men’s tennis team concluded play at the Virginia Ranked+1 Invitational Sunday, collecting three more wins in singles at the Synder Tennis Center.
In Orange Singles, junior Johan Backstrom defeated Rafael Paez of N.C. State 6-4, 1-0 ret. Sophomore William Kallberg, ranked No. 56 in the nation, defeated Chris Cooprider of UNC Wilimgton 7-6(0), 6-4 to finish the weekend 3-1 in the Blue Singles.
Senior Jonas Lutjen, ranked No. 21 nationally, beat VCU’s Max Wennakoski 7-6, 6-4 in the White Singles to finish 2-1 and improve his record to a team-leading 8-1.
On Saturday, Lutjen and Backstrom teamed up to win the Black Doubles, giving Lutjen his second title of the fall after claiming the singles crown at the Southern Intercollegiate three weeks ago.
All total, the Rebels finished with 13 wins in singles and doubles on the weekend.
Ole Miss will be back in action at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. Several Rebels will be competing in the prequalifying which begins Sept. 29. The qualifying begins Oct. 1 and the main draw starts Oct. 4.
